    Hi

Back in 2005 i was insured with ******** Insurance on the .:R. During that period i was hit by an uninsured driver. So obviously i phoned insurance and got them to chase it up. But as it turned out to be an unregistered van and no policy anywhere to be found i was given the option of not making a claim, which i took. Was also assured at the time that it will not affect my no claims or premium at that time or the future. I was also told by the said rep that i would not need to declare it anywhere either.

Today i get a letter from my current insurer, ******* Insurance. Asking for a nice sum on top of my premium, due to the said incident above. Wasn't written on the letter anywhere what it was for, just a premium increase. Had to call them and find out what it was to be honest and they were not very happy with giving out information. After arguing on the phone, i was told i would get a call tomorrow from a supervisor. So waiting for that call tomorrow.

Can they do this? Any ideas where i stand on this?

I mean i didnt make a claim and i was told it wont affect anything. They should have it recorded.

    Thanks

Did you tell your new insurer when they asked 'any accidents or convictions in the last 5yrs?' that you had an accident involving an uninsured driver but no claim was made?

If you reported the claim for info purposes only... you should still have declared it...and said it was a for info purposes claim only and no claim was pursued.

Insurers share date, to prevent fraud, so yes, they can share stuff like that. You should be ok though, as once they check it up, and confirm no payments were made or claim pursued, you should be ok.

Easy way around it is to let them be aware of it, so there are no surprises.

I didnt tell the new insurer, essentially they are the same company, only cause i was told i would not need to when going through the process with the first company.

I am not fussed in paying the amount they want, but the principle of it, they waited till the cancellation period is over and thats when they sting you. Its the underhand tactics that this company is using that i am really peeved off with.

Also, just to clarify, insurance is for a different car to the .:R

I don't understand why you are having to pay more if it's based on an accident you had but didn't claim from - I'd contest that and wouldn't pay any extra.

Same for me, there should be no call for you to pay extra for supplying the info but not pursuing a claim.

I got knocked off my bike a while back and claimed on the other party's insurance for damage to my bike and my personal injury, with no claim against my insurance from them as no damage was caused to them or their vehicle. I had to declare it on future insurance but stated the claim value against me was zero. It never affected my renewal premiums for the following 5 years that I had to declare it so can't see for any reason why it should affect yours now as no money changed hands and no claim was made.

Another one of the great insurance cons....

I was in her Mini a few years ago and was hit while stationery. Took the details, pics, no real damage apart from he put his tow bar through the rear bumper. Reported it within the hour for them to persue.

Turned out the scroat was uninsured. Insurers weren't interested in helping. Police didn't give a flying flip even though I had pics of the cabbage. His address was false too I found out.

Given the option of going though the insurance, paying the excess and losing 2 years no claims, or sourcing a secondhand bumper and fitting it myself, there was only one thing to do. Closed the claim, fixed myself out of my own pocket. end of. We thought.

She opted into a company car for a few years. A few months ago she changed jobs, so we got her her own car. Went to insure it. All fine. Then got a call from a shirty jumped up insurance adviser claiming that she didn't tell them about this accident and it was paramount to fraud. She did what she usually does and let them load an extra £40 or so onto the premium. I got wind and hot the roof. Phoned them up, and they weren't interested.

Total madness. You are hit by an uninsured driver. You pay for it out of your own pocket and cancel the claim, yet STILL have to pay a premium for a claim that never actually happened.
