Just tried to swap my wheels over today to start to even out the tread, jacked up the front, then the rear, put it on axle stands, took the front wheel off (Cleaned it up a bit while it was off as well Smile ) took the bolts out of the rear, could i budge it? nope! tried hitting it with a rubber mallet, nothing, tried kicking it, thought the car was going to come off the stands.

put it all back together, and then did the other side, and exactly the same, both rear ally's rusted on to the hubs!

does any one have any tips or tricks for getting them off?

put them back on the axle stands and just leave one lose nut in, the lay on the floor and kick the inside of the tyre fron underneath the car. Much more successful than doing it from the outside edge.

Even safer with a 4 post lift wouldnt trust any bolt let alone axle stands with me under it.  It happens all the time if the wheels havent been removed for a while persistance pays off in the end.  I have greased mine as it happened to me..  Garage wont chage you more than a drink to change them over safely..

Another trick you can try is putting the bolts in about 90-95% and lower the car back to the ground, move the car back and forward again as the weight of the car can break the bond.  Don't go too far though ;-)

Do you have a 4 Leg axel stand or just three? I have had a car come off axel stands as I levered down to release a rear spring, punctured fuel tank but fortunately I was at the side of it and not under so be very very careful putting a lot of sideways force on the car

I only have 3 Legged stands, I have a trolley jack, I will try and jack it up on that, more stable than the OEM jack and the Axle stands put together, other than that I have a nice big Jag Alloy I can lower it back down on to for a bit more stability.

Happened to me, stuck at the side of the road with a flat.

All you need is a rubber mallet, WD40 & patience. Honestly, just empty 1/4 of a can over the hub and wait. then vent some anger with the rubber mallet and it should just pop off.

Went to Halfords to day to get some penetrating oil today, the bloke said to loosen off the bolts then drive it round a corner, so i did this before putting the oil on and hey presto, sure enough it freed them off the hubs, however they still needed a bit of tugging to get them completely free from the hubs.

They are all lubed up now so it shouldn't happen again. Party!!!
