Has anyone ever done this before?

I am thinking of using a spare usb ipod cable i have cutting the usb end off then connecting this to a connector that will connect in the back of my gamma cd player and allow the ipod to act as a cd changer. From the back of the Cd player I would require audio out L+R from the ipod to audio in L+R at the cd player and then I would like to charge it at the same time, the ipod can charge using a 12v or a 5v supply, so I could reduce the voltage to 5V using a resitor or something then i would be able to play my ipod through my cdplayer and charge it at the same time all for about £10 compared to £60+ for similar setups currently available.

any ideas on this idea, help and critism appreciated

Did you mean to put this in the mk.5 sectionEmbarrassed?

The thread below should answer your question, but you can't use a resistor as a voltage dropper in this way,you also need some sort of regulation as well, but be prepared for noise that could well cost you more money to sort out.

In short this won't work as the head unit would have to be tricked into thinking that it had a CD changer attached - this is what the third party iPod controllers do.

An alternative is to get an aux in adaptor - theres plenty on eBay from about £30, see here for an example.

These will not charge the iPod though but they are a reasonable alternative to a full blown iPod adaptor such as a Dension or Dice unit that are around the £100 mark.
