My current boss poached me from his own boss (harsh) and I've since worked for him (same company) for 5yrs now, not that long but it's the longest in one place for me and I truly do love my job and the people I work with.

I relocated to Manchester from Milton Keynes 2yrs ago now, the 1st year was horrible as I moved 3 times (didn't get on with sharers/car vandalised etc) and got hugely homesick Embarrassed  But I stuck at it even though I said I'd only give it 6 months and I'd return home (MK) if I wasn't happy.

However, since moving to where I am now housesharing with a good mate, only 3 miles from work, great bunch of friends within the area; I've been really settled and loving it Yes

My boss sits me down today and tells me that he feels 'strongly' about me relocating to Birmingham (our newest office/branch) and he's mentioned in passing before about me moving but I've always laughed it off and said no chance but this time he was deadly serious and didn't crack a smile - he wants me there in 4 months Crying

I really really really don't want to go, I even told him to give me a company car and I'll drive there daily (wish I hadn't agreed to that actually) but he said there wasn't enough pennies left in the pot for a company car plus I'm lower management and don't actually qualify for one - phew.

So where does that leave me?  I think by rights as long as he gives me 3 months written notice of the contractual change I have to abide, if not....what?  Redundancy? Sacked?

I would ask our HR woman but she's sipping cocktails on a beach in Spain right now and her sidekick is useless.

How to ruin my day Sad

    Hayley

they can give you a 90day contract change notice, if they're serious about keeping you now would be a good time to screw a large pay rise out of them or 4 day week etc. Work it to your advantage if your boss likes you that much.

Doesn't sound too good for you what with an uproot now your happy and settled .......

but surely if you can make the move down to Brum and mange to work the cheekey magic to wangle a good payrise and reloaction expenses then maybe you could wind up happy and settled again and better off.

You've only just got used to the many varied accents in the NW,now your going to learn the Brum lingoSad,get a new job and stay.

Guess it all boils down to your happiness chick, are you happy now? Would you be happy in Birmingham? Have you sat and talked with you boss about your feeling about living in the NW?

I don't care how 'strongly' he feels about relocating,it's all about you at the end of the day.

It might not help you make your decission, but you should defo put yourself first hereYes

    Doh! I thought so Sad

Well you see, when he relocated me up here I refused to come and begged for redundancy (wouldn't have got much at all) but he gave me an extra £7k on my salary, extra 5 days annual leave per year, paid the deposit on my lodgings (£500), covered all relocation fees (£2k) and a one-off cash bonus of £1500; so I think I did well and plus we've had huge cut backs at work, our spends on our company credit cards are beeing monitored closely and he's already told me there aren't any pennies in the pot.

Tbh even if he gave me a little payrise I still wouldn't be interested, I'd rather be happy with my home life than have extra money.....although I could do with the extra cash too Chuckle

Doesn't look good really does it.

Agreed I would try and get what you can out of them especially a payrise etc..And unfortunatly they just have to give you the required notice etc etc...

There is always a plus side though....  At least now I can fit that quickrack for you properly and get to the bottom of the ESP issue:) Did I say just found a guinea pig lol...

I've got major brain ache (stop laughing you lot....I do have a brain believe it or not Chuckle), all I've done since 5pm is cloud my head with random thoughts about it all and keep trying to picture myself living there with no friends or family and starting all over again - I don't like the idea of that Sad

Pay-rise schmayrise.  It's not all about money.  I've uprooted and moved to new areas of the country 3 times in my adult life and hated it every time and got majorly depressed twice by it.  No amount of money would make me do that again.

He's done it once and now he wants you to do it again - if you do it again, what happens when they open their next new office and he wants you to move there too?

It's your life - you shouldn't be letting someone else decide where you're going to live it and if that means having to find another job, then that'll be diifuclt too, but you need to think about what's going to make you happiest at the end of the day.

    My 2p anyway.

    Jon.

I know! Surprise  I don't want a mixed southern/nw/brummy accent - I'm gonna end up like one of those mixed breed dogs that nobody wants Indifferent

I'm well happy up here mate and have a great network of friends but my boss said 'you're not married anymore, no kids, no pets, no boyf, no mortgage....what's the problem then Haylz?' which made me realise other than friends here what do I actually have to stay here for.....I value my friendships as it's all I have (he kindly pointed out I've got naff all Embarrassed).

Haven't properly sat down with him as his phone keeps ringing or people keep waltzing into his office when the door is frigging closed and my evil look kinda gives it away that we were 'busy' Angry

I hate making grown up decisions Stick out tongue

It must be crap in all honesty. I've never had to relocate but I do know how wonderful up north is.

Vince and I are only down the road but I know thats no consolation... Wink

Look after number one and if that means staying rooted to the NW but with a new job, then so be it.

If it doesn't fit, spit on it and try again.

Hayley I'm with jon on this one,

You've got to be happy at the end of the day and that's all that matters, I know you've said you love your job but have you looked around the manchester area for anything similar?

It might be worth a quick scan around before you make any major desicions?

I know your boss has been good to you in the past but if he's saying things like that to you then it makes him sound incredibly selfish and only really out for himself and what benefits him at the end of the day. From that it sounds like he doesn't really give a damn about your personal feelings.

What do all those things matter though - the point is, you're happy at the mo, right?  But he just doesn't seem to give one about that -  He just wants you to move (and make your life harder) so he can make his life easier.

I'm going down to mum's for the weekend tomorrow, so I'll have a good natter with her and see what wisdom I get out of her....she'll probably tell me to take redundancy (if it's an option) and move back down with her rent free until I sort myself out which is great but not if you get what I mean.

Out of interest what is the standard redundancy that I'd get?  Is it a week for every year you've been there or something like that?
