I have the following fault with my recently purchased V6 4 Motion - when the engine's cold and the climate control is switched on the air con compressor pulley and its inner centre rotates fine. However, when the engine gets hot the outer pulley turns fine but the inner centre starts continually sticking, consequently making a noise every time it sticks, until finally the inner centre starts jamming. Let the engine go cold again and the inner centre turns normally as the air con pump clutch cuts in and out as normal, with no noise.

There is no cold air anyway so the air con obviously needs a re-gas, question is could the lack of pressure due to no gas cause the inner centre of the pulley to stick/jam i.e would re-gassing cure it? Or is the air con compressor simply knackered (not sure why there's no inner centre sticking problem when the engine's cold though)? Obviously if the pump's knackered I'd rather not waste my money re-gassing it until the compressor's changed!

Anyone had similar problems? Scanned the other threads but couldn't find this particular fault.

    Any thoughts most welcome!

    Cheers!

Sounds like the the clutch in the compressor is stuffed Confused

Do you have the part number and if it is the same as the one i have spare you might be in luck Yes

if you run the pump when there is no gas it will not pump the oil around that is in the system so will bugger the pump and will seize

or drop me a PM with the details and i will double check for you

Eeek, thought that might be the case!! Strange, the clutch seems to work ok when the engine's cold?

Anyway, cheers Andy, will check the part no. and get back to you! Yes

it could be a case of getting it re gassed and job done but might be too late

if you get it hot like you have done turn her off and see if you can turn the centre shaft by hand, if it does not move then i would say it was stuffed.

ALSO what year and engine code is yours?

Will check out the part no. as soon as back returns to normal.. been agony the past couple of days! Can't even blame it on the wife!

    Cheers!

Excellent, will try the re-gas and if that doesn't work sounds like I might be in luck!  How come you removed the air con, thought it was std on v6 4 Mo's, must get a bit hot, mind you with our weather! Storm

Was searching through some of the previous threads and looks like you changed your lambda's, coil pack and leads at some point; my exhaust emissions light came on just after I bought my 4mo (typical!) and the VAG reader says Lambda Sensor Heater B1 S1 performance low P1103 17511-163. Do you know which one that is? According to GSF car parts its one of the 2 pre-cat ones but they didn't know which side, apparently Bank 1 should be on the same side as Cylinder no. 1, sound right? Is Cylinder 1 on drivers side? will have to go and have a ganda when my back's sorted..

Seems like quite a common fault on other 4 mo's but sounds like a connector clean might do the trick so guess I should give that a go first?

    Cheers!

Well before i sit here and toast my keyboard with the in´s and out´s have a look at this and it will clear one or 2 things up LOL

As for what bank is sensor 1 and 2 i think as you look at the engine from the front

BANK 1 is on the left and BANK 2  is on the right

sensor 2 relates to after cat´s as far as i can think Tongue Tied

i STILL have lambda issues so less said about that the better, my car thinks that light is there because it should be it has been on that long Embarrassed

That's seriously impressive! And I thought the 2 motion was a joke! Full respect, I wouldn't know where to start with a project like that!! I bet its good at spinning its wheels with the V6 in it Tongue Tied

Now I see why you don't need the air con! If I can't fix mine how much would you want for the compressor?!

    Cheers!

    Hi Andy,

Not sure if you saw my last post, but just wondering how much you'd want for the compressor if I can't get mine working again (providing you want to sell it of course!)! Smile

    Cheers!
