Hi, I was driving home today with the windows down and it suddenly started to rain so up the windows went. As the passenger one went up I heard a noise like someone had thrown a stone at the car. Checked the window and it's suffering from the problem described. I pushed it up manually while holding down the operate button and it stayed in place. I don't want to use it now in case it doesn't go back up again. Anyone experience this before or know how to fix it?

    It's a 5 door. :D

EDIT: The passenger side was slower to go up than the driver side window over the past few months. Big money?

Sounds almost like the window regulator snapping.  When mine went we were waiting for SOCO to turn up after the car got booted.  Easy enough fix if you are handy with a spanner, its more a pain in the backside than anything

Stealers do them from memory around £25-30.  Its a remove door trim, undo window (i removed rather than taped out the way), remove inner panel and replace the regulator.  Its a very very tight fit and kept me quiet for a while :-)

I helped change 2 of these yesterday, the first one was a sod but it's one of those jobs with a steep learning curve.  The second one was easy.

changing window regs is cake - do it yourself - learn how to do it so you are not lubing up the *** at the stealership.

this should be what you're after.....if the link works. it's relatively erasy enough to do (once you've done it the first time)

yes - the first time is a learning experience, but also a good one - this is not a hard job to do at all - not a ton of tools needed etc - much easier if you can get your window up first - grab on both sides with door open and push it back up.

I tried to click that link that you provided stalefish, but it wont let me leave this site through it - thread creator - just go to vwvortex.com and search for window regulator under the MKIV forums.  make sure to search the archived content for the best DIY results.

that's exactly what you need, it's the same place i got mine from. get the repair kit first then if necessary get the motor as i can't imagine they're cheap.

I'd like to know the answer to evil genius' question.....i have the same issue, but vice versa.....passenger goes up slower than drivers, and then sometimes stops, and you have to press the button again......

It isn't normally neccessary to change the motor as well, done loads now and the old motor has always worked fine once it's screwed onto a new regulator, and one slow window is normally a sign that very soon you'll also be learning how to put a new regulator in.

And if you do this job yourself, make sure you have an M8 ZXN or triple square bit to undo the two bolts that hold the lock mechanism to the door, these are NOT Torx bolts and if you try to undo them with a Torx bit you will damage the head of the bolt, especially if it's never been undone before.

chris, is the window reg a hard part to replace compared to just clips?

is it worth replacing anything else while replacing the regulator?

    thanks

And also this can sometimes be cured by adjusting it.You'll need the doorcard off with the window wound down a few inches so that the two clamp bolts are visible through large black plastic grommets, loosen the bolts off just enough so that they aren't really tight and aren't really loose.Wind the window all the way down, and then all the way up,this should sort of push it back into it's proper position, now down again a few inches and re-tighten the clamp bolts.
The secret to getting it right is how much you loosen the bolts by,if you put it down and then up again and it's still struggling, then undo the bolts just a touch more and do it all again, eventually it should all fall into place.

Effectively the whole door has to come apart,so not that much more work than replacing just the clips. When ever I do this job now I also take the lock mechanism apart and resolder all the wires, and if you haven't delocked yet, then what better time to do it than when the door is in pieces?
