Had the misfortune of needing a paint and panel repair back in March 2008 after some w**ker drove into the left hand rear quarter of the wife's car and then failed to stop.

Car is a 2007 Golf Match in Reflex Silver. Repairs required were:

    • Reshape wheel arch and refinish rear quarter panel, blend into rear door and roof.
    • Refinish alloy wheel
    • Refinish bumper moulding
    • Fit new rear valance

Obviously with the car only being 7 months old at the time, resale value and warranty validation were very important and my local VW main dealer was given the job. Whilst the paint match and blending were very good, the following were less than acceptable:

    • Sanding marks under paint on wheel arch
    • Tar spots under paint on all refinished panels
    • Dust in clear coat on alloy wheel and bumper moulding
    • Poor paint match on alloy wheel (looks like Reflex Silver has been used rather than the proper "bright/chrome" finish)
    • Overspray in door and tailgate shuts (took two days to compound off)
    • Overspray on rubber trim in trailing edge of left front door (impossible to remove)

Take it back and get them to re do it, that's not what you should expect from a VW body shop, it will be still under warranty, don't stand for rubbish work like that because you have paid the money and you want the job done right!

vw conning people again, paint work warrenty isnt worth the paper its written on lol we offer a lifetime warrenty on our paint work, and our clears are manufacture spec surpassed.

the scratches under the paint will be the filler, overspray is an easy fix, but the tar is a big no no,

what i dont get is why they had to go into the roof??

tbh with the colour they will/should be going down the side now

feel sorry for you, how much did they charge out of interest???

ps take it back, but dont be snotty its not nice to deal with that type of attitude in the office, as the office staff cant control the workers

"Roof" was probably misleading, but the curved panel over the top of the doors has probably been clearcoated at least (there's a slight paint edge along what I'm guessing is the laser weld on the edge of the roof panel proper).

I would hope that a paint formula exists to refinish the wheels to match the factory finish.

IIRC, cost to the insurance company was £750-ish.

Probably left this a bit late to complain to the bodyshop but I am going to write to them anyway, it will be interesting to hear their comments. Will send a copy to VW Customer Services too.

This is the first VW that we have owned and I am highly impressed with the factory paint finish. I got into the whole detailing thing to keep it that way and as you can probably tell I'm still gutted!

Diagnosis of the sanding marks issue is that the filler/paint has sunk, which probably explains why no-one has noticed before now.

Richard Alexander have agreed to refinish the wheel arch and wheel. It's going in to the shop on Tuesday (09/09/2008). Will update further when we get the car back.

Yeah the paint can sink if the filler is not sanded smooth enough before primer is applied,

glad they are standing on for you, just watch for the clear darkening like i said in the pm

You can't get the staff.... Sad

Probably paying on a bonus system, which leads to the lads rushing (and bodging) jobs to earn more £££'s.

If you don't get any joy, I have a number which may be of some use. Surprise

I categorically asked the bodyshop manager this morning if his lads were on a time bonus system. He said that they were not.

We shall see what next Friday brings. Watch this space...

Collected the car this morning. They took the panel back to filler/metal, primered and refinished.

It was raining this morning so not ideal conditions for a thorough inspection but first impressions are very favourable. The car was with them for a whole week so hopefully they have taken the time to do a decent repair.

Will comment further after I have had chance to wash, dry and inspect it in good light, but at the moment I am quite pleased.

    (Craig, I am at Oakes).

More overspray in the door shuts (another fun afternoon with the T-Cut required). Some kind of weird paint run in the color coat on the door bottom and the anti stone chip caoting on the sill under the rear door has been painted over three times now it is almost smooth.

The refurbed wheel was actually a good match with the others until a lump of stone or wood in the road hit this wheel yesterday and now it needs stripping back to bare metal and refinishing.

Don't know why I bother. This car is jinxed. £16K down the pan. Sad
