So last night very late I had a little ding-dong with a new 997 model Porsche. He pulled along side me at some lights and I saw the nose and fabric roof and thought it was a Boxster. Thought to myself "I'm going to toast this sucker"... he pulled away pretty rapidly and I soon realised it was a 911.

We then shot up the road and he couldn't lose me, we had to slow down for cameras a couple of times, but each time we accelerated he couldn't get away. We carried on for a mile or so, and he eventually eased off and let me past.

I know driving like that is dangerous etc  etc, but what I mean to say is that he was trying, and not really succeeding in getting away...... Got to love VWs!

     Thanks for the comment.

In reality, my Golf isn't that special, and I don't think it was a Carrera S.....but still, I was shocked at how hard he was trying to get away!

Theres nothing more satisfying than getting your gear shifting spot on and keeping up with a car that by rights should blitz you.

I don't want to sound cynical but if the driver of said Porsche couldn't lose a circa 200 BHP Golf then said Porsche should be removed from present ownership and passed on to a more deserving party i.e. me. :-)

    GT..... It's good to torque

may be the driver of 911 wants you to win or say he wasnt that confident to drive it or what so ever reasons......

i mean a 300 bhp porsche 911 is best and if i can afford i would buy that rather that a golf.

i dunno hard for me to believe that the guy in porsche was struggling to keep up...

I hate to be cynical too but any porsche wouldnt have to try very hard to lose a GTI with a remap. A gentle press on the accelerator would do it easily.

You're all absolutely right. You would never have thought that the Golf would stand a chance, perhaps it was poor gear selection on the part of the Porsche driver, perhaps it was the fact he didn't want to kill his labrador on the passenger seat. Either way, I could tell from his face he was shocked.

His Labrador?! Are you saying his Gf was a dog?  First you attack his car and now his missus!!! lol Chuckle

Perhaps he was shocked about how quick the golf was, maybe he under estimated what it could do - im sure you'd get pretty used to blasting cars with little effort driving a porka

On the golf v porsche topic. My neighbour who was driving a new 997 Turbo black with cream interior. Has just sold it and bought a mkv R32 black with cream interior. Thats a 100k car to a 25k car!! And whats more, he prefers the R32 every time!! More usuable, can get the family in it and still a quick sprint to 60!

Just makes me love veedubs more and more lol!!

Thank God! Some common sense at last, and far from cynicism. Was begin to think every one here was completely naive tbh.Oh and the remap bit is irrelevant too.

Seraph, the fact of the matter is, that it doesn't matter how fast your car is if you don't know how to drive it! (admittedly, this deconstructs the whole point of my original post)

Maybe you meant it as a flippant comment, but I would say this is probably near the truth.

Sorry dude but your mapped 20vT isnt going to keep up with the Porka if he really puts his foot down.

    Absolutely

But when you read threads like this, you have to assume several constants, i.e.

    - Both drivers were of equal skill (Unlikely, admittedly given your age.)

    - Both drivers were actually trying to outdo each other

    - Both cars working fine

If so, the golf, whether 150/180/210hp is not going to blitz the porker without a miracle.

exactly, at the end of the day if the cars are fine, its all dependant on the driver. if you say that you kept up with the porsche, then lets say the cars were fine, you would easily beat the golf if you were driving the porsche properly if you know what i mean.

a 2008 carrera was beaten by a merc kompressor amg  why, because the porsche driver wasnt exaclty good at "driving" if the porsche and kompressor drivers switched over cars he would have been left miles behind coz the porsche did 0-60 in 3.3secs whilst the merc did it in 5.1secs Big Smile

Although i agree with abilty of the drivers having some part, it would take a hugely incompetent 911 driver to get beaten by a golf.
