Just away to buy a TDI golf as my second car, to keep the Evo minted and the miles down. The savings on fuel is also a key factor as I do 250 miles plus per week.

    My options are:

TDI S, SE, 90 - cheaper insurance but lower spec trim etc, ins group 8

GT TDI 110 - gti style seats etc., colour coded trim etc. ins group 10

Kinda swinging towards the GT but any advice would be a big help.

Any advice on where to get a 2nd car discount on the insurance would also be a big help.

    Thanks guys

Admiral do quite a good multi-car policy maybe try them for a quote on both first and the make your decision also if you are doing a 1000 miles a month at least then maybe the 110 tdi may be the better shout

Depends on how much "fun factor" you want, personally I'd go for the GT but if you've got an evo to play with I guess you need to save as much £ for petrol as you can!

If its a tdi with a PD engine, make sure it has had the right oil used.

Cheers guys, I think I'll prob go for the GT me thinks. its a 1999 or 2000 plate I'm looking at. There not PD engines? is it the later models that are PD right?

Fun wise, the Evo8 does that job quite well, lol. what makes everyone say the GT would be better on fuel - not working so hard?

the 110 tdi and 90 tdi are not PD, 100, 115, 130 and 150 are all PS.

I think its just cause the 110 is the kinda middle out the lot so you get the best balance of power/mpg. Not really sure tho.

I got the GT TDI as I wanted a diesel Golf but I wanted something a bit more than the S TDI etc. I would have loved to go for the 130 or the 150 but my insurance would be through the roof!

Thats pretty much the same as me. Main reason being, i didnt want the 4 spoke rubbery wheel and weak interior.

Got to be the 110 out of those two

Re insurance - personally I wouldn't bother with the multi-car policies. Do an internet search (I recently renewed via Go Compare - cost me £382 with 8yrs NCB, based on 40K per annum, but I'm getting old now 29 and counting!!!). I bought a second car last year (Shogun), and managed to get an introductory discount of 9 years NCB on it based on the fact that I passed my test in 1997.

If you're not arsed about the interior, a remapped 90 will probably be cheaper all round and is still a laugh Big Smile

If he's got an Evo I think he's got plenty of fun factor there. Smile

The other day the traffic on the motorway was moving at about 65 and I was getting about 71-72mpg in my 130 (for a prolonged period). not sure about other models. Normal motorway driving (70-80) its about 65-67mpg. Can't argue with that.

I have a 90hp SE and if i was to choose my car again i would go for a PD engine. 90hp isn't that great that's why i had uprated injectors fitted to it. Running around 110/115ish.. Big difference!

Only bad thing i can say about it now is the cost of TAX. Think it's £185 a year on the old diesels as compared to £120ish (correct me if im wrong) on the PD's.

If you're set on either a 90 or 110 id go for the 110... Better still, get a PD Yes

I managed to get 74.2 average on the motorway sitting between 50 and 60 on a 100 mile journey. They are pretty good on the fuel Big Smile

If I was in your situation, I'd get one of the later tdi 100ps se. I borrowed one before I got my 150 and was really impressed. It's excellent on fuel, has good pull throughout the gears and if you can find a high spec one, has everything you'd need. The one I was using had cruise, multifunction steering wheel, heated seats, air con etc. If you get a dark coloured one then you won't have to put up with the black bump strips which make lighter ones look terrible. Great car!
