Below is a step by step guide how to replace your puddle lights in the front doors with your own coloured LED bulb, this guide will have pictures and an explaination with each picture to show you how to do this.

First of all you need to buy the right festoon LED bulb to replace the normal filament bulb, from the picture below I have measured the length of the normal bulb to be 37mm in length, but saying this you can buy bulbs up to 39mm in length which will still fit seeing that the metal arms which you fit the bulb into can flex.

The website I used is called http://www.ultraleds.co.uk/ and the excact festoon LED bulb i bought can be found here
    http://www.ultraleds.co.uk/u36bl9-39mm-bright-blue-dome-light-leds-superior-p-594.html

Ive measured the bulb myself and its 39mm in length and as you will see, it will fit perfectly, there are other bulbs on the website such as a super bright green bulb and also dimmer red, cool white and amber bulbs. Below are pictures of the bulbs.

First of all the equipment you will need to carry out the mod are as follows:
    Flat headed screwdriver
Pair of plyers or some with tiny hands/fingers
The fuse guide from the forum (search for it)
    The new LED bulbs

The first task to be carried out is removing a fuse from the fuse box in the car, the reason for this is that if the door is open then the contact for the bulb will be active and if your screwdriver or anything else makes contact between the two contacts then you will short out the fuse by causing a high current load, by removing the fuse your creating a open circuit for the puddle lights therefor they wont be on and no electricty will be flowing throught the circuit making it safe.

Using the fuse guide printed from the forum of the fuse card provided in the fuse box remove fuse number 14 (F14), pictures below showing the fuse location and fuse diagram.

The fuse diagram is located here http://uk-mkivs.net/forums/p/168839/1164785.aspx#1164785

Now the puddle light circuit is safe, we can get to work in changing the bulbs over!
The next step is the remove the puddle light unit from the door frame, this is extreamly easy, so dont worry about it!
All you need to do is get your flat headed screwdriver and place it under the edge of the light and gently ease it out, it doesnt matter which side of the light you use, a picture is below showing you what to do.

Now you have the puddle light unit out from the door you can disconnect the power connector to the unit to make it easier to work on, see photo below.

Just squeeze on the two clips either side of the connector (the green clip) and the power clip will slide out easily.

Now the unit is seperate from the power cable we can work easily on it and remove the front cover of the puddle light.
To remove the from cover from the unit is quite easy, it has two clips either side of the unit, all you do is get your nail/finger or the flat headed screwdriver if you want to and un-clip it from the unit and then simply slide it off the front.

The next stage now we have the front panel off the unit is to remove the exsisting bulb, again this is a very easy task, inside the puddle light container you will see the old filament bulb clipped in between two metal clips which hold it in place and also act as the metal connectors for the circuit, all you have to do is place your flat headed screwdriver in between the connection of the bulb and the metal clip to pop out the bulb, you can see this in the photo below.

Once the bulb is removed you can place the new LED bulb you bought in its place, this task is a little tricky but still very easy to complete, you have to grip the new LED bulb in a pair of plyiers, or use someone with very small hands and fingers to slot the new bulb in place, you have to guide each end of the new bulb, i.e. its metal connectors to clip in place with the metal clips in the puddle light holder. When you line it up just push nice and hard intill it clips in place, picture below.

Make sure that the side with the LEDs on inside the bulb are facing out, dont worry if you have place the bulb in and there not facing perfectly out, all you have to do is put your finger in the bulb and spin it around, it moves quite easily and you can get the perfect postion for the bulb this way.

Once this is done, look down and marvel at your handy work! you have succefully replaced your old bulb with a new super bright LED one! Big Smile

Now just repeat the steps in backwards to re-asemble the puddle light unit, then put back the fuse which you removed, fuse 14 to reconnect the power to the puddle light unit and test it out!

The photo's below show the finished product!

I hop this How to guide has helped you, if you have any questions or querys just post a reply and I will try to answer them!

    Thanks Resonance

I had the door cards off on mine this weekend and the bulb holder + bulb came out of the passenger side puddle light while I was removing it and  it was a different type of bulb to the one above. It looked more like a W5W (sidelight bulb) than a festoon type so just check your bulb types before doing the mod Wink

    Thanks old_n07!

Didnt realise there were different types of bulbs in the puddle lights!

My Golf is a T reg (1999) make and its the 1.9 TDI 90 BHP so least people know what is standard for that type.

If anybody has anymore info on the different types of bulbs would be appreicated!

    Thanks Resonance
