Ok, the wifes clutch pedal has broke, as per this informative thread here:-

    http://uk-mkivs.net/forums/t/18012.aspx

This and sounds like a common problem.  Just wondering how old everyones car was when this happened?

Im aware of 2 cars this has happened to.

    1) VW golf 1.8T T reg 1999 - happened around a year ago.(115k)

    2) Skoda Fabia 1.4 W reg 2000 - happened just yesterday.(46k)

im thinking could it be happening as cars approach a certain age? 7-8 years old perhaps? or am i going to be proved wrong?  any info appreciated thanks.

dont think age or mileage affects it, ive fitted a load of these at different stages, the one on my own car though broke about 5k ago (3 months) and its a 2000 with 148k!!!

Mods : .:R32 front bumper, 18" RS4's, 150 turbo, .216 nozzles, FMIC, chipped NI remap, anni headlights, debadged rear, sharan badge mod, german plates, black grille - now 167bhp

VW technician - complete with mobile diagnostics, all VAG work carried out.

mine went yesterday, the mechanic i took it to welded the clutch pedal back on, all that was in the footwell was a white clip and a broken black plastic piece. No metal parts? However when this happened around 15 mins later i heard a sound from the engine....almost like pressure being released? Can anyone explain this?

Also my clutch works perfectly fine but the pedal seems to sometimes go into a higher position??

There is small box section welded on to the pedal where the square white clip pushes into, the back snaps off it but it sounds like your man welded it back on instead of fitting a new pedal??

i think he put the white plastic bit back in? also can anyone explain the sound that i heard...it was like pressure being released or loss of some sort of fluid?? and would it be better for me to buy a new pedal now? just incase?

When fitting a new pedal ...   fit the pivot bolt in from the left ,  so the nut is on the right ,  makes it a lot easier , and works fine.

The clutch pedal on my 2001 1.8T has started squeeking, could this be an early indicator that I'm going to have the same problem? Or am I just being paranoid!

Last night I stripped all the bottom dash trim off to get in with the WD-40 but it's not made any difference, except I managed to scratch some of the soft as s*** rubber coating off the lower part of the stearing column :-(

    Andy.

My pedal has started squeaking tonight.  Sounds more like its coming from the outside of the bulkhead though???

just a matter of time adam!

it does all depend on how much town mileage the car has done, if its mostly motorway miles it will last a hell of alot longer, where as the all town mileage cars will go sooner!

This has got to be the most depressing thread ever lol

Surely this is bloody dangerous - driving along at 50 or whatever and suddenly your clutch is gone?! Why am I not hearing more horror stories or near misses etc, or am I missing something?
