The following guide is how I went about installing the el wire mod & hids into FK angel eye headlights.

DISCLAIMER - If you attempt the following and it goes wrong or you break something I will not be held responsible, you do this at you own risk. If your not confident you can do this DONT DO IT, or get someone to do it for you and blame them if it goes wrong!Chuckle

I bought 2 1.5M of super bright el wire & 2 12V inverters from surelight, and a set of slim 35W 6000k hids from hids4u. Try "ToyotaPro" as a voucher code with hids4u to get 25% discount.Wink

These are the headlights I used.

The blue & black wiring with bulbs in the headlights will be removed to install the el wire. There will be 10 bulbs in total, 6 around the dipped beam & 4 around the full beam.

Strip everything out of the headlight that you can; back cover, bulbs, wiring, levelling motor & grommet.

Then heat the headlight in the oven to heat the glue to remove the front glass. I heated the headlight for 2mins 30sec in a fan oven at 150deg. Using a screwdriver work your way around the glass to loosen the glue, eventually you will get enough room to grip the glass with your fingers & pull the glass apart from the black plastic body.

Following pic was taken after I seperated the glass, removed the angel eye covers & started to feed the el wire through the back of the dipped bulb and towards the full beam. After the 2nd loop you go back out through the same hole you started with to feed the next light.

2 loops of el wire around channel.

El wire being fed from dipped bulb to full beam bulb position in the back of the headlight.

    Both lights with 2 loops.

Angel eye covers back on, a pair of tweezers & a small screw driver helps to keep the el wire out of the way while you clip the covers on.

Next I used a heat gun to heat the glue & put the glass back with clips to secure. Add more glue where it looks sparce.

I next took the black connector off the hid bulb wiring to feed the wiring inside the headlight. I used a small jewellers screwdriver pushed into the connector to release the barbs and remove the connector.

Put the hid bulb into its holder & clip it down to prevent any damage, then start feeding the hid wiring through the inside of the headlight & out through the hole on the top edge of the FK headlight.

Push the rest of the hid wiring through inside the headlight toward the same hole, use a pair of long nose pliers to help get them out.

Push the rubber grommet through from inside the headlight & secure into position.

Put all the bulbs into their housings & clip in, then re-install the original wiring (excluding the blue & black daisy chain)

Next install the levelling motor, it goes here.

You need to connect the ball end from the motor into its housing in the headlight. This is a bit fiddly but it must be done for the motor to actually function properly.

The motor will only lock into position one way, if you look at the motor it will have 3 lugs, 1 large & 2 small, you can only fit these one way. Position the motor as in the pic and rotate anti clockwise to lock into position.

    Next connect the motor wiring.

Then connect the hid spades to the dipped bulb connector.

Put the black connector back on the hid wiring that you removed earlier, don't forget to pull the barbs out again to lock the pins into the connector again.

I cut the FK original yellow wire with connector that originally passed into the headlight through the back cover. I then soldered this onto the positive wire for the inverter & soldered the earth wire onto the black fog light earth wire. Doing it this way there will be no wires coming out the back cover with the inverter inside the headlight.

Connect the positive wire from the inverter to the brown wire & connector. This will supply the inverter with power as this wire goes to pin location 10 (side light) on the multi plug for original lighting.

I cable tied the inverter in this position.

I then checked everything was securely connected & clipped in, then put the back cover on and repeated the whole process for the other headlight.

Once I had finished the other headlight I went around where the glass joins with clear silicone just to make sure the headlights had a watertight seal.

The next pics are after I had removed the front bumber & old headlights, there are guides on here on how to do this. Here's imageworks excellent guide on removing front bumber.Yes

Drivers side ballast & ignitor install locations.

Connect the ballast, ignitor wiring & main wiring to the headlight & secure headlight into position.

I installed the passenger side ballast & ignitor here, but I might put these under the headlight on the plastic tray at a later date.

Again connect all the wiring & test all your lights are working.

WORD OF WARNING - THE EL WIRE LIGHT OUTPUT IS BARELY VISIBLE DURING DAYLIGHT SO YOU MIGHT THINK THEY ARE NOT WORKING, JUST LOOK VERY CLOSELY.

Put your bumper back on & connect the outside temp sensor and your all done!!Yes

Now you will need to get your headlights properly aligned at you local garage/mot centre.

Here's how they look at night.

With the HIDs on, hard to get a good pic as the HIDs are so bright!

Other people that have done the el wire mod have stated they have passed an MOT with no problems, I will have to wait a few months before I can say mine have passed. I might have CCFL lights installed by then though, as they should wire up to the same inverter as the el wire, CCFL are visible during daylight.

I hope this guide helps anyone doing this install & hope I have covered all bases, please let me know if I have forgotten something.

One last thing I forgot to add was be very careful where you touch when you have the glass off, as your fingers will probably be covered in sticky black glue. Clean any mess with white spirit before you put it all back together.

    Thanks for the commenys guys.Yes

ruebix - It only looks blue in the pic (probably the white balance setting on my camera), when your looking at it in the flesh it is actually white, it matches my 6000k hids perfectly.

Hey, jus had a browse through posts in the forum and came across this... I am thinking of doing this but it looks like the bulb itself is more powerful than the EL wire... does the HID's overpower the EL wire or isit just the pics??

j0ker1 its just the pic mate, they can be clearly seen when looking at them with the naked eye.

You can barely see the angel eyes in daylight though, I will be changing the el wire for CCFL soon. So I would advise anyone doing this to use CCFL from the start as they can be clearly seen during daylight.

CCFL lights would wire up exactly the same way as the el wire setup I have done in this guide.

     Nice job...

I have a question though. I have FK's on my Bora to allow me to use a HID kit. I'd like to do away with the halo's and convert the foglight into the side light. Is the blue and black wire already there in the headlight's the + & - I need to tap into??

I want to use a wedge bulb holder with a led bulb for the side light.

Gavin if your talking about the blue & black wires in the second picture, then yes you should have this already in the headlight as they carry all the bulbs that light the halos.

You could use a fog light bulb rewired as side light from said loom, not sure how your going to mount any other type bulb into the foglight mounting though!

On a side note, where you in Belfast a couple of weeks ago, more specifically the roundabout at Fortwilliam joining the M2 heading north?

Just I caught a glimpse of a very nice bora very similar to yours and thought to myself "I wonder if that was GavinN.I from the forum?"

I plan on making a wedge sidelight bulb holder fit the foglight opening by making my own holder to suit. I take it then the blue is the + and black the earth??

Hmm I was but it may have been Bora_Benz as he's in Belfast all the time at Queens.

BTW if your bored and want info on local meets closer to home gtini.com is good..This place is amazing but not many form NI on here meet up but those who do are on the aforementioned site.

Yes Gavin blue + & black earth provided you are using the original FK loom to power the headlights.

I'll check GTINI soon & would be interested in a meet, but Im afraid ukmkiv's is where I will always call home!
