I'm sure most of us don't use Morrison's fuel in our cars, but might be worth passing this information to friends/relatives who may do...

As some of you may know, my old man works in a large Esso oil refinery.  He advised me yesterday not to buy fuel from Morrison's anymore because of changes they have made.  While all fuels now contain 5% bio ethanol as an environmental measure, Morrison's are using fuel with 15% bio ethanol which does not comply with British Standards (if you look on their pumps now, the BS mark has been removed and I have seen this for myself to confirm it).  Bio ethanol in some tests that Esso ran, can lead to degradation of rubber seals & gaskets where it comes into contact with them over a long period of time.  In the test room, this is believed to have lead to premature failures in the fuel systems.  New seals have been developed for new cars which resist this for longer, but older cars such as the Mk4 could still be prone to being affected by this.

It's not a chance I want to take and think it's worrying that Morrison's bosses have decided to take this gamble on the motorist's behalf without giving any warning information about it.

I just thought it was right to pass this on to make people aware...

    Wigster.

I just think it's shocking that they changed the fuel to something which tests have shown to produce problems, then decided not to tell anyone.

Chris - if you fill up with fuel at any other petrol station, the BS mark is usually somewhere on the pump, either next to where you pick up the nozzle from or next to the display.  Morrison's no longer show the symbol.  Sad

Shocking, I never have or will put supermarket fuel in my car purely for the fact that I don't trust it and this strengthens my beleif that it is not to standard. Plus the local shell garages around these parts are all on a par with the supermarket prices or out by a penny so I go there but another thing to be heeded with all petrol stations ALWAYS PAY CASH NEVER USE A CARD AS THEY ARE ALL RIPE FOR SCAMMERS

I've no idea how they've done that.  If you look at their pumps though, it's quite clear that there are no BS markings anymore.  Quite worrying really.  Sad

    Quote from Morrisons website:

    BioEthanol E85

Morrisons was the country's first petrol retailer to open a Bioethanol E85 refuelling pump, which reinforces our position as the UK's largest forecourt retailer of alternative fuels.  We believe that by encouraging the use of BioEthanol E85 we can contribute to the reduction in the harmful effects to the environment caused by the burning of fossil fuels.

At the moment, BioEthanol can only be used in flex-fuel vehicles including the Saab 9-5 BioPower and the Ford Focus FFV.

Full details here. Including the few locations that actually supply E85.

Edit: The BSI standards are, for petrol (BS EN 228) and for diesel (BS EN 590) and these should be shown on the relevant pumps. Note "super fuels" (high octane) such as V Power petrol are covered by BS 7800.

This is not what I was referring to - the link is to their commitment to 100% Bio Fuels.  I am talking about the bio fuel content that is included in the fuel blend that is dispensed from the regular pump at all stores, not the 100% limited trial they are doing in the link.

I'm not suggesting you're making it up, you're merely repeating something you were told.

I simply find it hard to believe a large company would disregard BS EN 228:2004 standards, across hundreds of forecourts risking customers vehicles and subsequent action against them in damages, plus action by HM Revenue & Customs and European courts.

I can't see how they can get away from this either being a big supermarket chain,i thought they would have to show the BS code by law.

So what BS code is the fuel they are selling then? or doesn't it have one thats why there is no sticker at the pumps?

I don't use Morrisons fuel anyway but i will spead the word Yes
