On the Mk V and Polos, if the front wipers are on, and you select reverse gear, the rear wiper makes a sweep.

Of course, they have a Central Control Unit to attend to this function.

Has anyone worked out a way to do this on the Mark IV Golf?

I am thinking a Bosch type switching relay with the coil being activated by the reverse gear signal, so the normal power supply from the rear wiper switch ( feed 87a on the relay ) is switched to the 87 feed, but unsure where to get the signal for this.

It would have to be active when the front wipers are going, but independent of the rear wiper stalk position of course.

But then, the feed would also have to be able to just supply a short pulse, so the rear wiper only sweeps once (or intermittently at least like it runs now).

    Any ideas?

I'll get the help of Mr. Haynes when I get home Graeme, but thinking about it now it would probably be easier to open circuit the +ve feed to the rear wiper motor with a five pin relay that would be switched by a simple home made timer circuit.
This would get it's main power feed from the reverse lights,or an earth which could be inverted from +ve by another relay if the main wiper puts out +ve when switched on.
The relay would have pin #30 to the motor, pin #87a to the OEM wiper moduleAND PIN #87 to the supply coming out of the timer module.
