just purchased my golf recently. it has a gamma tape player with a seperate cd player underneath. it also has a nokia phone kit installed. everytime i turn on the ignition, about 10-20 seconds later i get a beep which cuts my music off temporarily.  i put this down to my nokia kit which i dont use, but im not realy sure if it is. i took my stereo and cdplayer out to see if i could disconnect the nokia kit, which im not sure if i can and i found there was lots of tin foil stuffed in there and the gamma unit was also wrapped in tin foil. when i took out the connectors from the back of the gamma unit i found that a yello wire had been bodged into the iso connector. the wire has its own free slot so it isnt bridged or anything, but this yellow wire then goes up to the back of my dash behind the steering wheel/clusters.

so i have a few quastions to ask which i will be very greatful if anyone could answer as im a little clueless

    1. is there any reason why there should be tinfoil behing my dash and around the gamma unit?

    2. what could this beep be?

    3. what could this yello wire be?

    4. can i get rid of the nokia kit?

    5. i dont have a code for the radio, and i read on here that it will re code its self if it is the origional unit, which i think it is. is this true?

sorry for all the questions but i realy am clueless here.

    thanks Dan

1.Maybe the installer was hoping to cook his dinner in it,there's no other reason I know of to wrap metal foil round a radio as it won't stop interference.

2.The beep is probably the hideaway box for the car kit doing some sort of check while looking for a phone.

3&4.The yellow is the mute wire, disconnect it and everything else and the beeps and other annoying habits will go away.

    5.True.

Thank you very much chris. that is a massive help. i will have another bash at removing it today. ill take a pic of the bodged mute wire. if this kit was installed at factory, which im baginning to think it wasnt, then it realy should not have been installed like this. do you know of anywhere i can find a wiring diagram for the connectors to the gamma unit. i just want to make sure i know ehich wire is which before i start to mess with it.

    Thanks again.

Car kits were never line fit, only by the dealer as an optional extra.

Stuff HERE about Gamma wiring etc.

thanks for all the info. it was a great help. i managed to remove it all. took me about and hour and a half as i had to trace the wires and remove the lower half of my dash to get to it. i forgot to take any photos of the shoddy workmanship, but it was truly awful.

    thanks again.
