After getting a pair of Hella RCCRs today, with some useful tips from this forum, I decided to make a photo guide to help anyone who is thinking of removing their rear lights.  Hope this helps.  Here goes :

    Frisky...

The only tools I needed were : 8mm socket head, T20 Torx head (star shape head), Blu Tack (thanks to jamesf for this tip), a screw driver type socket handle and flexible extension.  Put a blob of Blu Tack in the socket head as this keeps you from losing the nut when you unscrew and refit them.

We'll start with the driver's side.  This is easier to do.  Open up the flap to gain access to the rear of the lights.  The driver's side has 3 nuts and 1 pin.  2 on the side :

...and 1 at the rear :

Making sure you use a nice blob of Blu Tack in the socket, remove each of the 3 nuts.  Careful when you take them off as not to drop them down into the bodywork.  The Blu Tack will help loads.

remove rear nut (driver's side) :

remove upper side nut (driver's side) :

remove lower side nut (driver's side) :

Unclip the bulb holder.  Press where the 2 red circles are and pull.

The rear light unit should just pop out a bit now.

There is one pin in the pointy corner (see pic).  Grabbing the light unit, careful and slowly wiggle it out (follow the way the pin is pointing in the pic).

Here is a pic when the light unit is removed :

Refitting is simply a reverse of the steps above.

Ok, the passenger side now.  Initially, I tried doing all this with the carpet trim in place, but it proved a real pain.  You will need a T20 Torx screw driver head to remove the first aid kit holder bracket. Then simply tug the trim and the poppers will come out.  You may need a flat head screwdriver to help.  The passenger side has just 3 nuts (no pin).

Here is the rear nut :

And here are the two side nuts.  Notice the tiny square hole half hidden behind the wires.

Here is a close up of the lower nut :

    Remove the rear nut :

Remove the lower side nut (make sure the Blu Tack holds the nut firmly when you carefully remove it) :

Now remove the upper side nut.  There is no pin on the passenger side.

Now unclip the bulb holder.  The light unit should just come out quite easily.  Here is a pic of the holes with the light unit removed :

Refitting is just a reverse of the removal steps.  Be careful not to drop the lower side nut when refitting it.

And there you go.  It should take only about 30mins.

    Here's a before and after shot :

Very good work mate , one other tip though , put some tape round the socket  when it is on the extension and it might save you a trip to Halfords for another socket like I had to.Mine came off the extension when I was doing the one through the square hole

don't worry, i did that too.

you gotta remove as much of  the surrounding trim as poss, then you'll reach the floor and see the nut you dropped!

lol so its not only me thats dropped it then phew. I can be completley honest now... I lost the socket also Confused

I did start to take the bumper off, removed the wheel, undone the screws but it would budge theres a black grommet type thing that I think was stopping it from coming off, it was too hot and I got a peed off so put it back together, ill try the other way cheers jammy b

Nice how to, got a set of Hella PowerColours to fit to mine soon, one thing I have noticed, the lights state that they don't have rear reflectors in them and I need to fit some according to the sticker on the lights and box. Now they were from GSF who had an offer on them, and as my car is green and these are green, they looked really nice and I just had to have them, but now I have seen this warning sticker, whats it on about, a note on the Hella info says that they were included in the box, but I suspect they have gone missing from it as it was open box stock, hence the offer, so it was a risk I took, do I need one / two reflectors?! The pics in this thread don't show any but are you Hella lights different to these ones? Will I get pulled and done for not having any, pass MOT etc?

Your help is appreciated as ever

    Hi John.

I've just run outside, driven my car out the garage and took a photo of my car for you!  If you notice, with the flash of the camera, the lower part of my lights reflect back red, so my car is road legal.

Because yours are green and don't reflect back, you'll definitely need two red reflectors (one either side) mounted somewhere on the rear of your car to pass your MOT.  I'm not sure it's legal to drive at night unless you have them.  You can get reflectors from your local Halfords or Motorist Centre etc.

Here's the pic of mine :

    Hope that helps.

I had hella clear rear lights on my mk3 which didnt have intergrated reflectors, but no way was I gonna screw them horrible things to my bumper. so I just changed them back to the standard ones when the mot was due, but the lights were hella (ill get me coat) easy to change on a mk3 abit more fiddly on a mk4 but its only once a year. and I had no trouble at all from the police even when I got pulled over at night. Confused

Thanks to all 3 of you for your excellent responces, I like the pics of your car at night Frisky, it looks the biz then as well as now, and thanks for getting it out and photographing it, its really appreciated.  Skierandy, thanks for your link, I like your Mod, but I aint got an R32 bumper, despite liking your mod there, I don't think I can justify in my mind getting an R32 bumper just yet for it, but maybe in the future, but if I get some silly stick on reflectors I may stick them right down at the bottom like your original was and then think about an R32 bumper for it, but that will then need the exhause modding.... Sounds like some large expense in the future. Simon, thanks for that idea, I had thought of that, but one of my clusters is broken, its got a chip out of it and leaks water, it's not showing white light so will pass MOT with them, but it won't take much of a bash to break it too much so these are going on to stay on so thats not really an option for me as yet.

Thanks all for those points, I will let you know what I do, with photos etc so you can see the difference as it will make a big one when I do it!

Well I did this today.  Definitely worth doing the blutack in the socket trick - this saved me losing the nut today !  Well worth it.  The passenger side third awkward nut is a bit of a bugger, but not as bad as I thought it was gonna be just gotta be careful and take your time - quite pleased I did it all myself - I can be a bit of a noob with stuff like this.
