We seem to be getting a lot of questions about the differences between these models.... so I have created a table of information and I will add pictures, equipment and options info at the bottom.

Pictures

Original 2004-2006 'GT'
Posted Image
Note: 2004 Model Year cars have dark headlamps, post-2005 don't

2005-2006 'Sport'
Posted Image
Note: Some Golf Sports have the same alloys as the 2004-2006 'GT', factory changeover date is unknown.  Vehicle pictured is fitted with optional front fog lamps.

2007 'GT'
Posted Image
Note: 170PS engines identified by twin tailpipes. This is the only model that has a rear GT badge.

2007 'Sport'
Posted Image
Note: These are rare and not very popular

2008/2009 'GT Sport'
Posted Image
Note: Darker headlamps make a return again. Tinted rear windows and black section in grille are the other exterior change over the 2007 'GT'. Rear badging is back to TSI/ 2.0 TDI, will not say GT.

2007 'Sport'

Note: These are very rare, although somewhat undesirable.

Why ? What's wrong with them ?

Nothing is wrong with them as such, they are still perfectly good cars. They just don't hold onto value as well and were unpopular compared to the GT models. VW didn't sell many of them at all.

Local Motorpoint has some Mark 5 GT Sport cars in stock for £11999, but beware on close inspection they only have the basic 1.4 engine fitted.103 mph, 0-60 in 13.4 seconds although the rest of the car appears to be the same as the UK versions

Yeah your right about the Golfs at Motorpoint. I'm sure when i looked a week or two ago they were been advertised as TSI's.

Spec is non-uk as theres no leather and alloys are just 16", and warranty will only be 24 months from date of PDI as there imports, so probably best avoided.

Are you sure about the auto lights and wipers, I spoke to a dealer today (VW Plymouth) and they said they were options not standard on the 04-06 cars.

Also does anyone know exactly when the "Laser Blue" colour was discontinued?

Thanks

I had assumed they have it as all the ones I've seen have and it was standard on the SE. However I've just looked on the internet I can't see anywhere that confirms whether it was standard or optional, so not sure [8-)] I'll add a note to original post.

Also does anyone know exactly when the "Laser Blue" colour was discontinued?

I believe it was June 2006, as it was not available to order on the 2007 model year cars. I have a brochure which confirms this.

They were standard on the Sport as I bought my wife one of these cars as they are based on SE spec but without cruise control (option), sports suspension & wheels, leather steering wheel, sports seats & mid line computer.

Dunno about undesirable, they are no GT but if you were a young driver wanting a high spec, good looking car without paying crazy insurance, the sport would fit the bill?

None of the Sports I've seen have had the auto lights/wipers/dimming-mirror, unless owner specced convience pack

Compared to the SE the Sport lost the auto-magic stuff, rear electric windows and cruise, gained bigger alloys, exterior colour coding, sports suspension and seats, leather steering wheel/ gear knob and on the 1.9 TDI a 6-speed gearbox.

Dunno about undesirable, they are no GT but if you were a young driver wanting a high spec, good looking car without paying crazy insurance, the sport would fit the bill?

Undesirable meant purely from a resale perspective.

Auto lights and wipers are definitely standard on all GT models throughout the Mk5 run.

Yeah the 18" Charlestons were always an optional extra, introduced around 2006/ 2007 IIRC.

Hi, the main give-away is the boost gauge in the dials. The 170 has one but the 140 lacks it.

Other than that look for the twin tailpipes at the rear to identify the 170. The 140 is actually the rarer car of the two.

Also watch out for the grey import non TSI regular 1.4 GT Sports floating about. They are mostly on F-prefix (Nottingham) 58/ 09 plates and originally got sold through Motorpoint. These have a mere 80PS. They are Irish spec and did originally have the 16" Mugello alloys but some may have been fitted with bigger alloys which makes it look visually incidental to a 140 TSI.

I see! thanks, I read the info you gave at the top of the page. but i thought the twin tailpipes (and boost gauge) were a characteristic of the gt 2007. And I was confused about the differences on the 2008/09 models. Now we cleared this out. thanks
