Duplicated this from the mk4 forum.

This for me has to be the best GTI ever.

Firmly staying with the mk4 but even so...

FWD is more fun than AWD.

Give me the Clubsport any day.... The R is way too common.

I've just driven my friends mk7 dsg GTI (performance pack) with superchips remap and milltek (327bhp)

In the dry it holds it's line really well, under power in early part of roundabouts it holds well (almost 4wd like),   accelerating hard out towards apex it holds better than I would have thought for a FWD car,  but ultimately it cannot handle all the power without some wheel spin and some torque steer.

It feels fun and lively in a way when you're trying to balance full power and grip at the same time,   but ultimately a 4WD golf would have fired out and away long time ago, with full throttle moments earlier and no torque steer tugging.

FWD cars have come a long way, BUT so have the power levels also, so for me I still prefer a 4wd

However, you see R's everywhere, nice to look at but nowhere near exclusive enough in my eyes. Plus trim levels are awful, no heated seats in standard form, even the GTI non PP I was recently told gets them!

I used to gawp at them now they are part of the scenery.

Give me CS any day.

Long term the 2WD is easier for the DIYer to keep on top of.
Too many driveshafts and excessive running gear makes it a headache.
I guess not everyone keeps their cars for 18yrs like me.

The R is clearly a great car and popular because it's so good. You don't see a bad review.

So there is a reason they are common!

Someone order a CS for me with everything on it (inc sunroof) and I'll buy it from you in 2yrs time...

:)

The reason the R is so common is because VW gave them away for pennies on cheap lease deals. 90% of them are lease.

I think at one point you could get one for less than 200pm.

FWD cars have come a long way, BUT so have the power levels also, so for me I still prefer a 4wd

I agree with you on this, I can't see the fascination about this car based on it being more "rare" and Golf R being more common, that rareness wouldn't allow me to apply full throttle from low revs in damp / wet conditions. It's a performance car and I'd want to get my foot flat down without battling torque steer / wheel spin / ESP kicking in. I guess it's horses for courses but 4wd affords you a high level of ignorance with the throttle pedal which is a lot of fun.

Yes and more probably.

My friend sent me a few snap shots of the price list,   and I said to him if you get one, make sure it's got the Silver 19's...

£2400optional extra for those wheels (as they also come with road legal track tyres,  I'm guessing michilen super sports or something)

I haven't even bothered looking as I'm not buying one,  but I can bet you a fully specced up one would be 40k.   I'm sure VW will charge like 2-4k for recaro sports seats yadda yadda,  adaptive dampers,  dsg     all those options are usually 4 figure sums,   oh and metallic paint is normally extra too.

Suddenly this exclusive golf becomes 40k and then you start looking at what you can also buy for 40k
