Buy a fully specced golf R,    then get the body kit of a CS and the recaro seats,  perfect!

Stock R brakes as well... no thanks ....

I agree with Rich... Golf R is a very good car and capable, but there are too many of them because of the lease deals..

I guess we all have different priorities, I can understand some people want more exclusivity. Some reviewers claim in dry conditions the lap times for the CS and the R are about the same, but for me and real world driving I'd prefer the 4wd traction so I can turn my brain off and stamp on the loud peddle in damp / wet conditions and get up the road without having to manage ESP intervention or torque steer. I wouldn't mind having a common model as that would mean lots of after market support for cheeky upgrades.

Visited the VW website to configure 'my' anni CS.

Personally, I think after the mk4 anniversary, VW have diluted the 'specialness' of owning a special edition car.

The mk4 was made in limited numbers, whereas after that, the Edition 30, and now the CS can be ordered just like any other Golf. Yes they may only make them for a limited time period to ensure some kind of 'special' remains.

Also I think any special editions should have the same visual spec like the mk4. Same seats, wheels etc, and paint options should also be limited. Other options are to preference.

The CS has been marketed as an uprated GTI, and just like the Edition 30, it is not going to be as 'special' as the mk4 anni was/is.

I bought a 2002 anniversary new, yes it was a very special car compared to the stock gti, and I do think the club sport is also a very special car over the Base gti. Mechanically and also looking great as well as for first time ever positive aero too. For the price they sell the club sport for I very much doubt you'll see many of them around. The gti anniversary was actually a steal when it was for sale back in 2002 being only about 2k more, the bus wheels alone were worth that alone...

No the clubsport is a mighty car without any doubt but it's not a bargain like the 25th was and also the mk4 r32

LOL

GTI "Clubsport" is much slower than the current civic type R.

So you pay all that extra money for a 'clubsport' ie a more track focussed Golf, and it's beaten by a regular type R by some margin.

Sorry, but i am disappointed.

See the guy was saying how much wheel spin he was getting out of the corners too.

Agreed the civic type r looks horrid, but the fact the golf is so much slower around that track is a real disappointment after all the hype.

Maybe if they called it a edition 40 then I wouldn't be so annoyed, but the word clubsport means it's for the track

Something isn't right here given the CS set the fastest Ring lap time beating the Civic.

Track type must be favouring the Civic in the auto express case.

:)

A 45 second track doesn't present enough variation. I know which result I would trust, the one that involves 8 mins of driving.

Ah sorry this is the 'S' version that beat the Civic. Even so, would be nice to see the 'normal' CS vs Civic Ring times.

Here...

Golf CS 'S'              7:49.

Golf 'R'                   8:14.

Golf PP                   8:29.

Golf mk4 R32         8:37.

Golf Ed35              8:38.

Golf mk5 R32         8:49.

Golf mk5 GTI          8:53.

Golf mk4 GTI          8:54.

Golf mk4 V6            9:09.

Civic                        7:50

:)

Edit: Given the CS has 35bhp more than the PP I'd guess the 'R' will easily be in range of the normal CS.

A 45 second track doesn't present enough variation. I know which result I would trust, the one that involves 8 mins of driving.

Yes and no,

3 seconds off on a 45second lap is a big deal, specially so because it's marketed as a clubsport!

i think we shouldn't defend the golf so much tbh. It did badly.

you could see the wheel spinning which was comical tbh.

As a car badged as a clubsport,  you would and should expect it to have done much better.  3 seconds off the pace I would have accepted if it were a Golf GTI,  not the 'clubsport edition'

The more facepalm part of all of this is no sooner did they annouce the Clubsport, then the Clubsport 'S' version came out of nowhere...  As if they knew the clubsport wasn't actually fast enough.

So what does that place the regular 'clubsport?'

A car which isn't as fast as other hot hatchbacks around tracks,  costs more than most,  and has to sit underneath the proper 'S' version.

if vw rebadge the clubsport as Edition 40,  and then have the 'S' version as the clubsport,  then it would make more sense.
