Although the normal CS is going to be as fast as the R given the extra power.. 4WD starts to look cumbersome.

I know you are going to say weather conditions etc but surely the 'R is supposed to be the top model?

It doesn't even get heated seats.

Just playing devils advocate here.

Golf R will shine on the roads.

4wd allows you to deploy all the power all of the time.

In that video you see him scrabbling for grip so much.  In a Golf R you would have got on the power 100% without wheel spin.  Just 300bhp deployed without fuss.

and crucially in a lot of cases much earlier in the corner too.

In a 2wd car you are always always waiting for the moment when you can start feeding in the power.

Some say it's fun to balance grip and wheel spin,

the fun in 4wd comes from being able to judge how much earlier u can get on the gas,

I'll take u out in my R32 sometime Noo,  you'll be suprised at how different the style of driving is with it.

Golf R is a boring proposition though, for many reasons. Id rather have too much power and fwd.... maybe not as quick of the mark and corner exits but lighter and more fun.

That's just it though,  Fun for everyone is different.

2wd u say fun is being able to fight the car for grip and being lighter

4wd u can say fun is being able to use all the power earlier and more of the time.

Completely agree.

Also people forget that their precious 4wd golfs aren't actually 4wd.

Just adds weight and saps power the only real benefit is launching and traction in slippy wet roads, on the dry I bet it would make pretty much naff all difference.

Another option is

Focus RS   £30k

or wait for the rumoured

Focus RS500,  surely that'll come in under £40k

I think it's pretty good value to be honest.

If supply is right it will be still worth north of £30k in 2 years.

If you keep it for 10+ years it may be another.

The clubsport s models are all sold out, there were only like 150 for UK I read, or lower.
I did see one in Milton Keynes on the road, presumably it was a press car being taken by some magazine.

The standard club sport models I've not even seen one yet on the road, must be still pretty rare.

I've been looking at a new motor and the GTI Clubsport with DSG, DCC, KESSY, Nav Pro and a few other options was one choice, but when I specced it up and looked at the price my arse nearly fell out of my pants!

almost £40k!!

A better specced Seat Leon with DSG, DCC, Upgrade nav and sound, Bucket seats, Sub8 pack including 4 pot Brembo's and Cup tyres was over £10k cheaper!! and it has a proper handbrake!

I know the Clubsport will hold it's price much better, but still £10K difference for basically the same car is madness.

Crazy price difference, shame really (not that I could ever afford one anyway)

like you say, it will hold its value much better but be better off waiting for a slightly used one to come up for sale

There was a Clubsport 'S' on Autotrader for £42k (with optional air con fitted) two days ago.

Not sure if it's still there...

Was at my local dealership this Tuesday for an event ( where they had mint examples of all 7 generations of GTI and an XL1 hybrid on show)

Anyway, they also had a Clubsport (with the poor old standard mk7 GTI relegated to outside !)

I of course had to take some pictures.

This had a plaque - Number 40 and with the options fitted was £37,535

I just think it look x10 better than an R!

The interior especially so. The standard R interior is DULL.

That's true. Really fancy an R estate in the future but the interior and tail lights (no led on the wagon) really make it too boring looking.

Looking at the VW site of the pictures of the new (facelift) Golf GTi coming out next year, some of it's features bear a close resemblance to the ClubSport (front grills over the fog lights), plus loads of extra goodies, full LEDs and strobe effect indicators.

Plus they are getting power hikes. I'm waiting for a 265ps standard GTI mk8.

Agreed the mk8 has outside features close to the CS.

Win win :)

I think they are still going with the term MK7.5 as its really just a facelift.

I'm not a fan of the front end if I'm honest but the sweeping rear indicators got me thinking about a retro fit down the line !
