Hi All,

I have the above car and my partner bought me a Pioneer stereo for Christmas as he wanted me to have a proper hands free phone kit and also the previous CD player didn't work.  The shop fitted the radio but didn't tell him the steering column controls would no longer work. We finally sorted sourcing the "correct" wiring leads and the shop got them and tried to fit them.  Apparently there are two versions for 2004 due to the change in model of Golf by VW.  When the shop's fitter tried to fit the lead he found the connector to the steering column wiring was not the right one.  He made enquiries with the shops suppliers and as soon as he mentioned the issue, the supplier said "there was another model of Golf that year, slightly different but as not many were made the suppliers of these leads didn't think it worth making a lead that was suitable".  This has left me with a new radio but I am unable to control it from my steering wheel.  Does anyone out there PLEASE know of a way around this so my steering wheel controls will work.

Please note I am a 50+ year old woman who knows nothing about wiring or radios!  .

I don't know if your "shop fitter" was using the connector in the Link below? It should just plug into your stereo connector. This is for a mk4 golf which covers upto 2003 but if you have a 2004 model they do one for a mk5 too.

They also do a universal connector which works with most models. If you contact their tech support with your exact car details they will tell you if it will work or not.

Failing that if you have wireless on your stereo you can get a controller that fits on your steering wheel.check that it works with your stereo model number first.

You can also get a universal one but you need the original stereo remote for that to copy the signals

These are a bit cheap and cheerful though so I would consider the other options first.

Hope that helps
