That bolt is for taking the tension of the tensioner so you can swap the belt without having to apply constant pressure.... take it out when done or screw it back so the tension is thight on the belt.

I have now realised this. Only bought the car yesterday . Why would it have been left in. Squealed all the way home.

Is there any adjustment or is it automatic? When bolt is removed?

Automatic, bolt is left in so you don't have to look for it when you need to replace the belt... that's why i said screw it back until the belt is thight... but you can take it out and keep it in a save place for when it's service time.... the newer versions of that type of tensioner are done with a wrench so and have to have constant pressure applied to them to be able to swap the belt.

you can still get this version though they are a bit easier to use.
