OSR wheel of my Mk5 has been binding internittently for a week and a haf, diagnosed by a hot wheel a week ago.

I thought handbrake but when I got it up on stands for a quick fix it wasn't. Tried winding back the piston and it was solid so calliper off, stripped cleaned and rebuilt.

Now smooth as silk again but ran out of daylight for re-fitting so it's my job in the morning

Caught up with some of the niggly jobs

1) Tightened handbrake cable.Noticed rear discs need doing soon.

2) Removed rear bumper (some very old torx screws in there) and sealed bumper vents as had a swimming pool / boot

3) Removed front bumper and replaced blown sidelights and upgraded to nightbreakers.

4) Investigated gear linkages - cleaned the gunk off for a start and could be psychological but seems a little smoother into 1st. Have a feeling a bigger job is on the way.

5) Regular checks - oil, washer fluid, tyres etc...

It is some time now that I changed the the cv boots on both driver and passenger side. Clean the joints and apply new grease.

The passenger is easier and the the wishbone does not have to be released from the ball joint.

Actually, if you have a second hand the drivers side wishbone may left alone and the axle taken away but need to be careful to not damage the threads.

May I suggest that you have the proper tool for the locking washer on the inner joint or it may take you a long time to take it back.

Also proper tool for tightening the steel bands that clamp the cc boots on the axle.

New dogbone bolts from VW. The 75mm 10 mil bolt was MIA, no Idea when that was lost

Two new rear speed sensors as the ABS light was on. I only needed 1 but my scan tool was telling me 00290 was rear/right when it was rear/left. Must be a problem with the Chinesiumā„¢ in the electronics ;)

Ripped of the rusted tattered remains of the disc splash plates which caused the ABS problem. New set going on in the spring with new stub shafts and bearings.

Oh mate yeah almost identical. How did that happen? I wasn't paying attention and rolled into someone on a mini roundabout at about 5-10mph. I was gutted

Pouring with rain now so not messing about anymore with lining it up. The camera makes more of a meal of the colour difference. Pretty happy. Now to swap the rub strip on the bumper and see to fixing/swapping the headlight.

Got back from out of the country on Friday, and I started back at work today, so drove it properly for the first time since the 19th.

...Now my ARB (probably) is clunking. After two weeks of sitting still.

Huh.

Just trying to build my idea of a clean Mk4.

Last night I was thinking why I couldn't seem to get the gap between the bonnet and wing close enough. After some head scratching I realised the car was on one axle stand so there might be some twisting of the chassis due to the uneven spread of weight. After putting the wheel back on and dropping it I had more room for adjustment and got it looking pretty good. Putting the bumper rub strip on was easy although I should have started in the middle and not at one end. I think the right hand corner doesn't quite fit due to this but I'm not too fussed. A blind man would be glad to see the difference!

Had a big service on mine done over the weekend including new disc's and pads for the rear total cost of just under Ā£300 :( and yet she's gotta go back at some point due to the coil-packs needing to be replaced as apparently No3's disintegrated so that's 4 new coils required at a cost of around Ā£120 not including fitting, the Mechanic I use who's mates with my brother said it's a common thing on Golfs of my age and he knows his VW's as his got a completely slammed Passat on Audi RS6 wheels
