I have a 2003 Gti, standard suspension and brake set up, purchased a couple of weeks ago. The standard wheels look dwarfed by the arches. I'm thinking of 17" wheels, and wondered what the max width I could go with them would be without stretching tyres or causing myself more work? Thanks

Offset is key.

Like Adam said, offset is basically everything.

Widest set of 17s I've seen on a stock body Mk4 is 11.5J I think.

I'm curious as to why you've mentioned no stretch though. You won't fit anything wider than an 8.5 on a stock body car without stretching the tyres. (Unless you like rubbing and hate paint.)

Just trying to build my idea of a clean Mk4.

Thanks. With regard to stretch, I don't mind a small amount but not these hideous tyres I've seen about. So offset is the key?
