Looking for my next car and I'm torn between getting a 1.6 and converting it to a 1.8t or just get a 1.9 pd

I know you would all say why don't I just buy a 1.8 out right but I'm not after the golf hatch model (hence the post)

As we all know the country/world is now starting to hate the old diesels and I would like this next one to last me a good 6-10 years!! So don't want to fork out on a car then tweak it with subtle mods and then get screwed by the gov for having a diesel!

Would like people views and opinions please

Cheers

Dave

Buy a 1.8t estate or Bora  if you don't want a hatch. Diesels are going to get hammered sooner or later.

haha f00k the country/world. Love the 1.9 PD and it will be around a long time to come.

The big cities are going to start banning or charging the older diesels, but by old that even includes Euro V engines which is ridiculous. I'd rather keep a fast 1.9 PD and pay a few quid extra to enjoy driving it in cities like London, than invest £20-40k on a new Euro 6 car which is complex and will doubtless be broken 3-4 years down the line :)

Surely you have to notify someone that you changed the engine or they'll see it anyway at mot?

An mot tester won't be interested if it's had an engine swap

@Stonedofmoo

I don't live near any cities so I doubt I'll get stung on city tax just hope road tax doesn't shoot up to £300-400 which I can see it doing in years to come!

Diesels are shoot anyway.

I used to think that manyyears ago based on my experience of a Ford Escort 1.8 non turbo diesel van (no turbo diesels in those days)

When I first drove a modern turbo diesel as as a company car (forced by compny not allowing petrol cars) and started doing lots of miles I began to appreciate  the easy driving with not needing to stir the box due to bags of torque throughout the rev range.

I had a couple of 2L petrol cars prior to going diesel and at cruising speed in top they were flat as a f@rt if you tried to accelerate without changing.

I'd be very reluctant to give up the diesel unless they impose big penalties
