Hi, I recently bought a 2009 2.0tdi (110) golf and today the engine management light came on and the glow plug light has been coming on when I've been on the motorway hitting over 2000 revs. The glow plug light goes off when I stop and restart the car but the engine management light stays on. I suspect it has something to do with the EGR and/or DPF and I will get the codes read as soon as possible and post them. However the car has been sitting for the past 5 months before I bought it and I've only had it 2 days and I was wondering if this may be the cause of the problem. Could the engine be running slightly inefficiently and there's been a build up of soot in the DPF due to the lack of miles the engine has done recently. I've read that a good long drive on the motorway can help clean out the DPF but I'm concerned about doing this because of the additional glow plug warning light that appears when I am driving on the motorway over 2k revs.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated and I will post the codes once I get them.
Thanks.

Either get it scanned right away or get it on the motorway for an hour over 2k.  If you don't, the DPF will clog and you'll been to fork out a lot.

No there was no warranty because it was bought from a private seller. I've since had the codes read and it was: 16785/P0401/001025 - Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) System: Insufficient Flow Detected. Which basically means the EGR valve is blocked or faulty

Anybody know how likely it is that it's just blocked rather than faulty. I can get it professionally cleaned for about £100 but a new EGR is £140 alone plus labour. It's easily accessible on the 2.0tdi unlike the 1.6 but still probably £250+ all in.
