As above just been quoted £485 and to be honest i'm a bit shocked as same garage did a cambelt on my mondeo tdci in feb last year for £320 and that was cheapest after ringing round my local area

Is the BKD diesel that crap a cambelt to change that it warrants £165 extra?

They're not the simplest to change mainly due to the ancillaries that need removing to get to the belt but that applies to a lot of small cars where everything is crammed under the bonnet with little space, You should still be able to get belt. tensioners and waterpump done for around £300-350 if you shop around.

There area few "independants" round me that aren't cheap either which I put down to the fact they have offices and workshops that are as big and exotic as some of the main dealers but there are small "backstreet" workhops that do a great job for a lot less it's just a case of finding them

Try yellow, pages, Thompons and internet business searches to get some  info andcall. Also worth giving a better idea of your location and see if any members can provide local intel

As AshOHFK said it is worthchecking with VW dealers as many keep the cost down and will price match genuine quotes to get the business

i got quoted on my the same prices on my octavia vrs some years ago and that was at skoda usd the lion garge in the end and got done for £385 ( ws £330 but tensioner bolt snapped so had to be drilled out ) so to be quoted dealer prices is slightly annoying as thought id found a good little indy with these guys just down road from work in ashby de la zouch so can drop off and walk to work, its either that or they don't want the work currently

is the belt doable with just basic hand tools and maybe an electric gun to get the crank pulley off? or do you need timing tools on the bkd? ( ie not just tipex  everything?)

Have you searched lion garage on google? I've been to them a few times when having issues with my Golf. They are VW specialists, they offer a wide range of services, including cambelt change and have various garages around the Midlands.

Something I got off their site:

Cambelt and tensioner replacement £325 inc VAT – all 4 cylinder models up to 2000cc

Additional cost to replace water pump £75 inc VAT

Hope this helps

Yeah I've used em few times before, used to live 2 miles from The Hinckley branch so was very useful, nearest one now is the Derby one (trading under different name apparently) but that's 40 mins drive south for me now! So ideally need something local to ashby for work that does a loan car or is in walking distance or something near Bakewell where I now live
