NAH! no bearings need to be done unless you are doing the front drive shaft bearings. You can buy the whole new wishbone with all bushes and bottom ball joint for as little as ÂŁ22quid per side on ebay (tierod69 - or something like that, I'm running those now) - plus fitting - if you can do yourself you could save ÂŁÂŁÂŁÂŁ's. Only IF you don't have GTI's or TT front ends this advice pertains

Why does the advice not cover GTIs?

I've done both bottom ball joints and I can't see the wishbones being an issue...

The only reason I didn't change my wishbones was because I had S3 bushes fitted in them by Midland VW when I got the coilovers.

My whole front has now been replaced, all but the original wishbones.

Definitely use Ebay for the parts, I use BandB components on there, cheap and fast delivery.

I got my track rod ends from tierod69 [Y]

only reason I said that is because they supply pressed steel components and not cast for the TT's - I thought that GTI's used TT's

Ah I understand!

Nope, GTIs run the pressed steel wishbones. Only the R got cast ones.

all so all i need is a ball joint splitter is that correct ?

I have the wishbones already with the bushes in and also have the seperate ball joints...

just changing the lot this time and will keep the old ones and may get some new ones pressed in at a later date.

i want to do this saturday but am unsure if i need any other special tools...

the car is a 2003 golf mk4 tdi

many thanks simon

I haven't got a ball joint splitter and have changed bottom ball joints and track rod ends.

I followed the old "hit it hard with a hammer" advice and everything on my 11yr old car seperated nicely.

They are stuck tight but aren't too bad.

I know it's supposed to be "right tool for the right job" but sometimes needs must.

I presume we are talking about the bottom ball joint being a pain???

IIRC once I had got some threads visible I hacksawed the damn thing off complete with nut. Took 2 mins with a new hacksaw blade. Just had to get the hacksaw at the right angle...

that thought did go through my mind, the space between that and the drive shaft is next to nothing

thanks simon

Same here, easier than removing the driveshaft
