Sold it now but had 105k on mine, engine was an absolute tank! The electrics on the other hand... most unreliable car I've ever owned. And the one I miss the most.

Very mixed feelings about the V6 4mo!

Is 210K still the highest? That's me!

I've ignored the noisy chains. They have sounded the same for 80K miles and if they slip then game over or replace the engine, otherwise they will be replaced next time the gearbox has to come out which shouldn't happen soon.

IMO, life's too short to worry about V6 chain noise!

MK4 electrics are mint?

Absolutely. Never have any issues. Known for doors not breaking like other cars; windows always working; resistors not blowing out.

2001 4 motion going well with 176k , shame the wings were made of cream cheese though.

I had my chains done, and the vanos units replaced about 15k ago. A lot of other work, but nothing special. Tidying up and making nice. Must get my Santa Monicas refurbed, though. They look awful. As for doors and windows, well, I've had to replace a few door controllers and the plastic front window clips. It's a painful job.

Still pulling like a train and making me happy at 228,000 miles. Nearly made it to the moon...

Wings are OK, too!

Hit the 200k marker the other week - now has 200,500 miles... All fixes have been cheap so far. Drives like new...

...Well, it will do!

(Once I find the vacuum leak, put new ps pump in and sort the noise from the high-speed fan out. Nothing lasts forever, so I'm expecting a few things to go this year.)

Mine's only on 117k - don't think I'll be breaking any records soon

@DerPanzerWagen I traced my vacuum leak to the intake runner solenoid valves at the front of the engine using BBQ propane, listening for engine note changes where I moved the hose around (no, I didn't blow up / catch fire but do at your own risk)

Neutron, that is clever - not sure I'd try it though!

DerPanzerWagon, that's a lot of miles for the timing chains:) Not even a hint of the marbles-in-a-can sound at tick-over?

I'm surprised: Chains are only expected to last 100k miles before needing replacing. Previous owners must have been careful with their right foot! Unkless they've already been done? I bet the rest of your v6 is mint, too:) Mine is tatty, but working on it...

Depends on how it's been looked after sometimes.

The interior is in excellent condition considering but the paintwork is starting to go in places and the alloys are fubar'd.

this is the thing with maintenance, do it in time and the chains and guides won't be a problem.... I so love the v6 petrol engines from VW i seriously need to get myself one again... ( yeah actually no, it'll take all my money, it's the reason why i'm in a vauxhall but it's slowly getting the same with that car also)

@hogwarden              228,000

@DerPanzerWagen    205,000

@bilge                        176,000

@Neutron                   117,000 (do keep up at the back.)

I have noticed this thread is nearly as old as our v6's!

My r32 is on 115k and I just done the chains because the block 208/9 were reading -9/-7 .bought the two chains and the intermediate shaft sprockets for £129 + some "o" rings of vw and did the job at home on my own and I’m 69. It would have been handy to have a helper to get the g/b out and in but that was definitely the most difficult job. Didn’t have a timing tool I used the handle that you use to change the wheel on the angle grinder, perfect fit. Once you have got to the chains there are so many marks that line up you can’t go wrong. Crank/cam sprockets/intermediate shaft. Honestly if you can take the g/b out, you can do it.
