As above, considering buying a Mk7 GTI and the second hand 230PP cars are really holding their value, whereas the standard 220 can be had for a fair amount cheaper. The used car price difference seems to be around £2.5k so are the extras worth it?

Any issues with the Mk7 GTI that I should be aware of?

I've driven one with the performance pack, and the diff is great. Makes the car pull out of corners so much better. Car feels fun and dirty. . Almost 4wd like.

But I can't keep thinking that if it were my money I'd just get the golf r.

Shoulda got a 150 tdi - everyone knows they are best..

I did chuckle at the 'dirty' comment though!

The R is out of my budget so it's got to be the GTI. Think I'll pop to the dealers to see what sort of deals they're doing.

Not so long ago u could do lease deals for around £300/m for a basic spec golf r. Quite tempting deal!

There were some bargains to be had but long gone now :(  I was looking at them and they were on a great deal however everyone is out of their allowance now. The last really good deals I saw were on the GTD's at roughly the same prices as the R was

Performance pack every time... the diff alone is worth it.
Either way they both map to WELL over 300bhp

Cheers chaps.

Didn't realise they'd have that much mapping potential, Jay!

Had a look at GTI world last night but they didn't have any amazing deals. Will have another look now though. *EDIT* - I must have missed some of the deals on the new ones. They have a fairly decent offer on 3drs but I need 5drs. Might be worth a call to them! Good shout!

As for the lease deals on the R, I did see those and I was tempted but I was a suspicious that it was too good to be true. I saw one last night for a GTD 3dr - £170 IIRC. Cheap but a DPF doesn't fit with my daily drive of 5 miles.

Those offers new today, hence you didn't see them last night..

Would like a MK7 GTI myself  :Y:

I had a quote from carwow. The best discount was £3.9k off a GTI 230 DSG if you take Vw finance, £3.2k otherwise.

We had a GTI 220 here at work as a development car and in stock trim it made 259hp stock! :o

So i would say drive them both first and make your own mind up.

I will say one thing tho, I would far rather drive the GTI that the R, Its alot more fun imo :D

Yeah i had it out quite a few times. Really nice and well balanced. Handled better than the s3 8v that we had here at the same time.

Sorry, missed this. There were some tempting offers but we decided to take the kids to Disney this year as they're fast growing up so the car is going to have to wait. There's nothing wrong with the A3, I just fancied a change but it was a choice between a memorable holiday or a new car that I'd get to do 5 miles a day in. I'm keeping my eyes on the used market at the moment and if a bargain came up, I'd investigate. I did see a nice one at Lookers in Blackpool, but it went before I could get there.

How about you?
