Something I need to start to consider, clutch is ok, but its original and now I've clocked 155k on it. Anyway sorry for cluttering the thread, keep up the good work on the mk4 :)

Not actually sure what the drop is, think it could be a little more than 35mm in the pic. Even with the Eibach ARB it had drive shaft contact when turning.

It's now 5mm higher at the front after I fitted an LCR splitter this week.

Been out on a longish journey tonight, a little [:@]

I replaced the front wheel bearings this time last year (well about 11 months ago) and guess what?

I have a 'drumming' bearing sound from the nearside. I've brushed it aside in recent journeys but tonight there is no mistaking, wheel bearing failure.

Should have bought OEM I suppose. I was incredibly careful when pushing them into the hub.

Ah well, another call to TPS in the morning.

Anyone need some bearings pushing local to Leicester? We can have group bearing push session! All my mate wants is beer tokens.

The front wheel bearings are a very very tight fit into a recess in the front hub assembly.

When replacing you have to push the old ones out using a press (and sometimes an old bearing), then you have to push the new bearings back in. It's just about impossible without a press of some sort.

My mate has a 12 ton garage press that we used last year, looks like I'll be asking him to help me out again. Was just thinking if anyone else needed a front wheel bearing doing locally it might be a good time as beer tokens will get it done.

Here's my thread from last year when I replaced both fronts...

I'm not sure pro-active is good. My nearside was ok last year, changed it pro-actively and now it's failed. If I'm honest I now would only fix these if they need it.

Anyway, I'll post a couple of pics up of my stripped hub again!

Well stripped down the driveshaft tonight to fit both new inner and outer boots.

Struggled to get the 6 driveshaft bolts loose as access is very awkward, particularly as I didn't think I'd be replacing CV boots. Could have parked over the pit.

TPS were spot on with the outer boot kit, GSF supplied the wrong inner so the shaft is still in bits ready for tomorrow. For anyone who hasn't stripped a driveshaft then just be prepared for grease, grease and more filthy old grease. I used a quality street tin about 1/3rd full of petrol and a paintbrush to remove the initial grease then I followed up with a super concentrated bucket of fairy liquid with hot water. This got the parts really clean. A liberal spray of WD40 finished off the prep.

Got some excellent close up pics for peeps that want to see what they are like under those boots.

Pics soon...

All sorted [Y]

Car is now a pleasure to drive again, totally silent bearing wise. Replaced: -

Inner CV gaitor.

Outer CV gaitor.

Bottom ball joint.

Wheel bearing.

Cleaned & rebuilt drive shaft.

All nuts replaced as specified other than the front caliper bolts (only their 2nd fitment).

Was a long job to be honest, those pesky driveshaft 6 x M10s are a nightmare to get some torque on, access is terrible.

Really noticed the 4degC tonight, car was ballistic.

Finally decided to go 'bigger' on the turbo.

Going to fit a GT28RS in the spring next year.

Want to run as close as possible to 300bhp with a smooth torque response.

The asthetics are almost complete so I need to revisit the engine...

I've been looking at an Ebay kit. Just under £1400 inc brand new GT28RS. Would still need injectors and 3" MAF.

Would fit myself as it's quite 'easy'. Thinking of getting a ported AGU head, these are also on Ebay at £490 IIRC.

Don't want stupid power, want it smooth and reliable.

Not posted on my build thread for a while but decided today to fix something that was broken when the vr6/g60 clutch/smf was fitted (late last year).

When the clutch was fitted the classic 1J0 711 256 snapped where the bolt attaches to the metal s elector 'arm' (was glued as a temporary fix).

Gearlink2Small.jpg

This is a very common failure and usually ends up with only being able to s elect odd or even gears, IIRC.

Anyway the part was on back order for weeks. Took about an hour to fit and that was at 'dossing' speed.

All fixed now [ :)]

Leicester TPS. As said though it was on back order for weeks, good job I didn't need one fast.

I think the part actually had '260' as the last 3 digits but TPS looked up the 256.
