I'm replacing the engine on our Touran after the infamous problem with the timing belt tensioner pulley stud letting go.
I've sourced a new engine, but the monkeys that supplied it have taken the tension off the belt, and removed the idler pulley. End result is I have no idea what position the crankshaft and cams are currently in.
Does anyone know how to safely retime the engine back to TDC on the compression stroke without mangling valves etc? I know where all the timings marks are, but I'm worried about moving anything as obviously without belt tension, the crankshaft and cams are free to move independently.
How do I set the timing back to factory default settings without causing damage?
