Spent the majority of the day planning and thinking.
We have moved the engine forward and up a bit to improve drive shaft geometry and ease of access to the whole drive train. This means don't need to cut the tunnel.
It will also enable us to run tyres up to around 30x10" not that we will go that big but it will give options if needed. Initially we will probably run 28x9"
I've placed an old toyota hylux wheel just to get an idea on rough dimensions.

I had a bit of a thought this weekend. As I have a lot of chassis work to do I might as well start from almost a clean sheet as it'll give me a chance to change a lot of the little bits I wasn't too keen on.

So I pulled the doors off and got to it

360.jpg

Pretty much everything has come out

360.jpg

360.jpg

360.jpg

The majority needed to come out anyway. I will be welding a new dash bar to the cage that the top frame rails for the engine bay will tie into.

With all the junk removed it will give me a chance to shed some of the mk4's lardy body weight. I'm planning on removing all of the inner skin of the back end. I might even go as far as removing the A and B pillar structure then tying them too the cage with dimple die plates. With removing all the unnecessary weight I hope to get the whole car down to around 1000kg with me in the car

Last weekend I cut the fire wall out and replaced it with somthing a bit lighter and cleaner looking

360.jpg

360.jpg

360.jpg

Then during the week this tuned up

360.jpg

Which means shits getting real with this build.
This is the build spec for a full tubular chassis drag car.

After reading through it couple of times I decided there's only 1 way to do this properly.

So I started cutting away

After a fair bit I managed to separate half the floor from the body.

360.jpg

I also cut the cage off the floor pan. It's a bit of a shame but the only way it's going to be useful now is any short sections of tube I need will be cut out of it.
The rest of the tube chassis and funny car hoop will be new and a mix of cds and cromoly.

360.jpg

Here's how she's looking now. Next up will be chopping the rear floor out, then all the second inner skin.

Cheers buddy

Yeah it is getting a little bit out of hand now, even by my standards. I never thought I'd ever build a tube chassis race car

I knew you'd get carried away and go full tubular chassis and why not? I mean you got all the tools and access to the materials to do it plus the space to do so.

Just make sure you do it to the standards as nothing would be more annoying than not doing it right and not getting a pass on it once you've build it.

It also gives you a chance to mess with the cars geometry as you can even widen the shell to make it look like that is how it was made in the factory... just don't give up halfway!

Yeah it'll definitely be done to spec, hence the sfi 25.4 book.

Got a bit more out today

360.jpg

360.jpg

Now started stripping the inner skin out for a bit of extra weight reduction

360.jpg

Still got a fair way to go but Hopefully some rollcage tube will turn up on Tuesday.

If only VWDRC had a Flintstone class - add wheels - and you'd be done!

Excellent work mate.

It would be fairly easy to do that from this stage. But I have other ideas.

I want to build a pro fwd car like in the US. No one seems to make them over this side of the pond, we'll at least not to the same standard. As far as I can tell no one has done it with a mk4 from what I can find. I've been watching a lot of PFI speed which is mainly Honda based but still such a awesome inspiration.
I'm hoping to end up with somthing along the lines of this

The weekend just gone I cut the door pillar out then had to add a fair few braces as the body got a little wobbly

360.jpg

Then started fabricating a chassis jig out of scrap laying about the yard.

360.jpg

The next day I finished it off and levelled it out

360.jpg

After reading through the spec a few times I started with the initial measurements and began laying out the main chassis legs

360.jpg

I've got the day off work tomorrow so I'll hopefully get the majority of the floor layed out and tacked together.
I can't do any of the bends at the moment, due to needing a new electric pump for the tube bender. Fingers crossed that'll turn up by the end of next week. If not I'll be stuck for a bit and probably end up chopping more out of what's left of the body

That's the main floor layed out and tacked up. Now waiting on the pump for the tube bender to turn up so I can get on with the main hoop
