150mR now the confirmed value for 4 LEDs.

33mR maybe marginal for 2 LEDs but worked for me on 2 units. Might need 40mR.

Fast Flash Current Threshold 'Reprogramming'

This DIY/modification allows the use of 2 or 4 LED indicators WITHOUT the need for additional load resistors.
Fast flash failed lamp detection will still work on the 2 LED option if the normal lamps fail.
On the 4 LED option it may still detect side repeater failure.

LED Lamps Required (or similar)

581 Front Amber LED 120deg (offset)
http://www.ebay.co.u...872.m2749.l2649

382 Rear Amber LED 180deg (no offset)

http://www.ebay.co.u...fsAAOSwJq1ZaC78

Resistors Required

33mR (0.033) 3W wirewound resistor - for 2 LED solution (just rear lamps changed for LEDs).
https://www.ebay.co....8098&rmvSB=true

or

150mR (0.150) 3W wirewound resistor - for 4 LED solution (front and rear lamps changed to LEDs).
Best option...
https://uk.rs-online...istors/4851385/

eBay x 10!
https://www.ebay.co....8UAAOxy~ilSQBdT

Note:

Once you have changed the shunt resistor DO NOT run normal lamps!
The 2 LED modification will tolerate all 4 being normal lamps but the hazard will warm up (hazards on).
The 4 LED modifcation will tolerate 2 of the lamps being replaced with normal ones but the hazard will warm up (hazards on).
The 4 LED modification will NOT tolerate all 4 lamps being normal ones the hazard will get very hot (hazards on).

In BOTH cases I recommend running the correct number of LEDs, 2 or 4!
If you sell your vehicle do not leave this modified hazard switch in place.
There is a risk of 3 watts of power being dissipated in the hazard switch which really is
not advisable (4 LED 150mR solution).

Suggestion

Buy another hazard switch to modify. Then if you ever switch back to normal lamps you can refit your original switch.

Fast Flash Current Thresholds

Fast flash factory current threshold: 2.72 amps
Fast flash 2 LED mod current threshold: 1.485 amps.
Fast flash 4 LED mode current threshold: 0.49 amps.

Information

Two types of hazard switches encountered, both genuine.

Type 1 - fited to my 1998 era car, difficult to disassemble and solder. Nicer 'tick'.

Type 2 - bought off eBay to experiment with, easy to disassemble, easy to solder. Not so nice 'tick'.

Type 1 & Type 2 Side by Side

Jf7EsJz.jpg

Type 2 on the left, my original type 1 on the right.

Cold Plastics.

Cold plastic disassembly = broken parts car parts.
Use a hairdryer or leave the hazard somewhere nice and toasty
prior to disassembly.

Type 1 Disassembly

pwzG6Uq.jpg

First remove the front of the switch. Use a screwdriver to spring the
two side clips. The circled resistor is the new part that allows 4 LEDs
to be used.

gHL8RRT.jpg

Then lever the rear edge of the black housing up. There is a slot to assist with this.
Do the top and bottom while trying to pull on the grey part. The inner part of the
switch will then slide out of the outer housing.

8C4QaRP.jpg

Exploded view.
Once the grey part has been removed the side springs my slip out.
These simply fit into a slot and need to be refitted later.

Identifying The Shunt Resistor

aBeXvvu.jpg

Spot the 18mR (0.018 ohm) shunt!

N5koA3v.jpg

Highlighted is the 18mR open air shunt resistor.

tuRGdLu.jpg

I didn't manage to disassemble this type any further. So we are looking
to remove the shunt by heating the joints highlighted. Access is tricky.
Two people actually make it easier, one heating the joint with another
using fine pliers to pull on the shunt leg. Do not just YANK on it, a
substantial amount of heat and dexterity is required.

Removed 18mR Shunt

FLiEDLO.jpg

A clamp to hold the switch is essential IMHO.

PIyN00m.jpg

Shunt resistor off to the left. You don't need to save this really. Up
to you! Do not try to solder suck the plated through holes, you won't
succeed, the copper lands are too large. What we are going to do is
pre-shape the replacement shunt resistor and solder "top side" only.

Soldering - Difficult Type 1

gySY7cz.jpg

Here you can see the finished result. The resistor body has to be on this
side as there is no space on the other side.
First, solder the distant "flexible" leg to the far point on the PCB.
Second, solder the resistor body leg to the closest point on the PCB.
Ensure the resistor body and wire do not touch the surrounding plastic.
This resistor will dissipate a small amount of power so keep this neat
and tidy with air space around it.

o3nnIUk.jpg

Close up of the soldering. You can see slight melting of the black relay plastic as access
is not easy. I use SMT flux and an RF iron at work, so kit is important.

i3W6V7k.jpg

Here you can see the other side. The resistor in the plastic tube is for
the red LED that illuminates with the hazards on. This prevents access
on this side.

FNJqxVH.jpg

Another image showing the 150mR wirewound shunt resistor fitted.

If someone manages to strip this type 1 switch further then please comment.
I could not detach the rear assembly which prevents the cream plastic assembly
being removed. Access to the PCB would make this easy.

Re-Assembly Of Type 1

Is pretty straightforward. Before fitting the grey part and PCB back into the outer housing
ensure you have fitted the side spring clips into the side slots. The grey part holds these in place.
Finally refit the front of the hazard with a little force.

Testing

Joy8kpc.jpg

This 4 LED solution was tested initially with 2 LEDs (rear) and 2 normal lamps at the front.
The 150mR shunt resistor got warm as expected (1W dissipation, hazards on). Changing to LEDs on the
front yielded an almost cold resistor. Perfect.

The LED performance is much better than the normal lamps.

zYTk3sA.jpg

Closest one is LED, lamp on far side.

I recommend running/testing the modified switch loose and plugged into the loom.
Run the hazards for at least 2 minutes and ensure the switch does not get hot.

Type 2 Disassembly

oaoKCvX.jpg

Remove the front of the switch, consider the location of the 4 tabs shown.
Ensure the switch is nice and warm so that the plastic is flexible.
I didn't use any tools just gentle persuasion.

BhhbV9h.jpg

Defeat the rear clips as described for type 1.
The grey part will separate from the front part/PCB.

1HLdrR5.jpg

2yZwR9X.jpg

Rear part, watch out for springs.

hlAgyuo.jpg

Remove the side spring clips.

aDZUmwG.jpg

Remove the remaining PCB from the outer housing using the clips
shown.

jwAU3al.jpg

PCB comes out to the the front.

Identifying The Shunt Resistor

aHmLwHQ.jpg]

Look for this slightly different shunt resistor on the top side of the
PCB.

Shunt Resistor Removal

Pliq5Yl.jpg

The above pads are for the 18mR shunt. Heat each one in turn and
use fine pliers to extract the shunt. Clear the holes afterwards with a
solder sucker.

lV133vl.jpg

18mR shunt removed.

Shunt Resistor Replacement

PaIuMmG.jpg

Shape the new shunt resistor and solder into place.
This is much easier than type 1 as you have much better access.

sZdfQtD.jpg

33mR 3W shunt resistor is shown fitted in above images.

Re-Assembly Of Type 2.

Once again is pretty straightforward. Reverse all the stages above. Pay attention to spring positions
(and the switch rod) when refitting the grey back connection part.
______________________________________________________________________________

All done.

The usual disclaimers apply. I am not responsible for any accidents, injuries or fires that may occur due
to this modification.

Please read the NOTE: section above.
I advise the use of the correct number of LED lamps at ALL times.

Enjoy the normal flash speeds fellas!

:Y:

See my build thread for the calculations of the shunt resistors and power considerations.

33mR, length 13mm should be OK, a little tight.

I have updated the 'how to' with links to parts on RS and eBay.

Remember this mod is tricky access wise.

I will re-iterate, use the right resistor for your application.

2 LED indicators = 30mR to 40mR 3W.

4 LED indicators = 150mR 3W.

0 LED indicators = normal unmodified switch!

Test and monitor the switch prior to rebuilding your dashboard as recommended.

It's covered in VAG part numbers so I'm guessing it is!

It's a much better solution than load resistors dangling everywhere. Also your car will be electrically more efficient, marginally!

OK, we maybe marginal on the 4 LED shunt value. Sorry guys. Both sides were working fine on Saturday.

All lamps are working according to Amanda just the offside fast flashes. Weird as all lamps are the same.

So I can only think the value is marginal. I'll keep you posted.

I may have rushed into publishing this how to... we maybe looking at 120mR or 150mR.

Update to come when I get time.

I have some 150mR shunts on order. Will take a quick look tonight but it will be a few days before a I can test this.

Something I didn't consider is the duty cycling being 50/50 despite there being a capacitor in the circuit to maintain the voltage across the shunt...
I was also trying to preserve side repeater failure detection.

Sailed too close to the wind it seems!

Ok quick investigation. All good with the engine off. With the increased system voltage (14V) when running it's pushed the offside into fast flash. 150mR should arrive tomorrow.
