Hey guys

Currently owe 1.6 Tdi SE. Had car for over 2 years now, absolutely love mk7 golfs. Thinking buying GTI or GTD, cant decide. Budget 13.5k max incl my px. Hardly do any miles, but occasionally (once a year) have long drive to EU (4k miles per trip). Had diesel vags only for past 10 years, bit scared to buy petrol engine also dificult to find one to fit my budget.

I've just made the jump from 20years of diesel ownership to petrol and haven't regretted it.

Go for the GTI.

(or R!)

A Mk7 R might be a stretch with the OP's budget, but I'm sure a nice R from the previous generation would be achievable, unless the OP has his heart set on the current generation?

Must be MK7, absolutely in love with this platform. Never ever bought (or planning to buy so far) same car twice. MK7 also longest ever vehicle kept, over 2 years.
I am planning to keep GTI for long time, so must have lower mileage (under 50k). Looks like will have to caugh up bit more money.
Still afraid of petrol, owed MK4 GTI before only for few weeks, that thing used to drink fuel.

Another vote for the GTI. GTD will hate the low miles.

Unfortunately the way things are going and if you intend to keep your car long term then I think you are better off hedging your bets and jumping to petrol.

I've always had diesel and like the look of the GTD over the GTi but even I think something will happen to squash private diesel ownership at some point.

I'm probably going to change from my much loved Mk5 in a couple of years, hopefully by then there might be a proper hot performance hybrid, maybe a 'GTEi'?
