Found out I could potentially enable needle sweep without any additional equipment, but I got lost in the guides when it came to whether my ROM ID is applicable.

I have a KKL cable (CH variant), and AFAIK I have a VDO immo 3 cluster with full FIS display (P/N: 1J0920946A).

However, I was confused about the ROM ID and whether I can activate needle sweep, lit needles and miles to empty on my cluster.

And not as desired, but I would also like to disable the oil level sensor if possible, for which I see an option for in DashDumpEdit.

I was planning on creating a file with the 3 options enabled, then a copy of that edited with the oil level sensor disabled, just so I can quickly switch between having the oil level sensor enabled or disabled (and obviously keeping a copy of the original).

Any advice/help would be appreciated!

Firstly you can't brick the cluster just keep your original to flash back if need be,can't comment on the oil level sensor but your cluster seems ok for mods only 1 rom id won't work unsure of which one but i have done a few locally never checked rom id and all was well. You will need vcds to change the country code back to UK because dashdump always for some reason changes the country code to European so everything on the cluster will be set to metric.

Great, thank you.

Could I avoid the country code being changed if I just manually do the mods with a hex editor? I only have VCDS lite at the moment.

You will be fine manually changing with hex editor i only have lite too but it's a hooky version that's got registration i can code with it not sure if you can code with the standard version.

Enabled MTE, needle sweep, welcome message and lit needles with a hex editor.

Didn't manage to find how to disable the oil level sensor though, and the welcome message gets overridden by the oil sensor workshop fault.

But I'm happy just having the other 3 enabled.

Any chance you can PM me a link to the hooky version @gazman70?

Post your bin.  ROM ID has to be correct though.  The common one is 10A4 but it needs to be right otherwise it won't work.

DashDump is fine IMO but it's annoying that it changes the country code, so I do it manually because it's faster.

Did you want to see the original or modded one?

I can confirm my ROM ID is 10A4, I found graeme86's guide on his website that gave me the correct hex code to change, worked flawlessly.

The only thing I didn't manage to get was disabling the oil level sensor, do you know how that's done?

Also do you by any chance still have a copy of VAGCOM 409.1 that you could send me a copy of? I remember trying to download it from the link on your build thread a while ago, but the link wasn't live anymore.

1F8 is the address for oil level sensor.  Seems to be 11111111 (where 1x111111) is oil level sensor.  Change it to 0 so it's 10111111 and it should be good.  Whatever that is in binary.

https://drive.google...-GM8DR3IlKaxFfT is my Ross-tech folder on my Google Drive.  IIRC it's in the "vag-com" folder.

Coded the oil sensor out with that copy of VAGCOM instead, seems to have worked okay.

Thanks again @adam-

Pull the EEPROM and see what's changed :)

Compared both binary files: file 1 -> needle sweep, lit needles, MTE and welcome message; file 2 -> file 1 + oil sensor disabled (through VAGCOM).

I used VBinDiff rather than scanning through each one by eye, and there's 6 addresses with data added, 6 addresses with data removed, and 22 addresses where data was modified. The changes are not all in one place either, so it seems the oil sensor disable isn't such an easy thing to do with a hex editor.

I've put the changes here in case anyone is interested in looking through them or adding anything to their cluster, would recommend the oil sensor disable is done with VAGCOM/VCDS though:

Lit Needles/gauges/displays:

  • Address 1ED - Original value: 30
  • Choice of new value:
  1. Displays lit: 33
  2. Gauges lit: 35
  3. Displays+gauges: 37
  4. Needles only: 39
  5. Displays+needles: 3B
  6. Needles+gauges: 3D
  7. Everything lit: 3F

Miles to empty (MTE)

  • Address 416
  • Original disabled value: C1
  • Enabled value: E1

Welcome message

  • Address 417
  • Original disabled value: 02
  • Enabled value: 6B

Needle sweep

I'd need to see where checksum is but you'll likely have that to contend with.

I guess that's gonna mean the code I posted above is unlikely to work for other people, but it potentially might work if they have the same ROM ID.

I was going to compare a before and after when using DashDump to disable the oil sensor, but I assumed the change of country code would mean data being changed at several addresses unrelated to the oil sensor.
