Hello! I'm Morgen, I'm 24 and I'm from Glasgow  B) Welcome to the worlds most depressing build thread/chain of unlucky car related events.

I have a "build thread" over on another mk5 related forum but it's just so quiet on there now I've sort of deserted it... My other half (Adam-) has been saying I should come on here instead, so here I am! A disclaimer, this isn't an exciting build thread at all. This is mostly a diary that notes every time I've broken something and Adam has fixed it for me with some pictures attached.

So, it all started in August 2014 after falling out of love with my little VW Up! due to my friend damaging it. I had been seeing Adam for a few months by this point and his love of flames and break horse ponies had rubbed off on me (he had finished building his 1.8t up around the same time I swapped cars hehe)... I figured why not go big or go home, so I bought a 5 door DSG Mk5 Golf Edition 30 in steel grey.

Here's my first photos of Roo on the day of collection. It's pathetic I know, but I call the car Roo due to the number plate. She was totally standard and had some nice optional extras (sunroof, lux pack, convenience pack, reverse sensors, MFSW etc).

Lovely isn't she? I'm an impulsive idiot however and couldn't even drive the car until November 2014 when I would have my first years no claims. I was only 19 when I bought it so that first year of insurance was crucial to keep costs down! I bought a k12 Micra for £200 as a stop gap car until I built up that NCB.

November 1st - first day I could drive it! Gave it a thorough wash, ran a clay bar over it, then glazed and waxed. Was reasonably tidy except for a little lacquer peel to the top of the windscreen.

Decided that night to de-wiper the thing (my first ever attempt at anything car related lel) but the arm had seized on so my work chopped it off the next day for me. Very kind of them.

Somebody on facebook kindly pointed out to me that the leftmost light wasn't tinted when I uploaded the photo of my de-wiper... So Adam bought me a new tinted one and I fitted it while at work. Looked so much better with all 4 matching!

Bought some carbon look paddle extensions, rubbish quality tho..

Adam bought me some LED interior lights, what a gem. From memory he had to help me fit them, and replace a fuse too because I blew one. The drivers footwell also has never been changed to this day as there was an LED missing from the kit! Super lazy.

Bought & fitted open fog grills as well as a cherry red hazard switch - don't seem to have any photos of these but another two small simple mods. Also replaced the paddle extensions with some much better quality ones and Adam fitted a little aux port after I had fitted the connects2 kit. Also have a photo of the two cars together.

By now we're at May 2015 - for my 20th birthday Adam bought me a smooth front grill:

Cam follower replacement on 79k miles - done by Adam of course..

Also May 2015 - bought some second hand Pedders 32 way dampening coilovers. Looked great! The top mounts fell apart so Adam managed to create some using bits from mk3 golf suspension... I didn't ask too many questions about that.

Failed it's MOT, Adam fixed it for me. Hurrah. Cleaned it thoroughly for Scottish car show prep.. New top mounts arrived from Australia too so that was good. Also bought a new lower grille as mines was grey.

Adam warped my brakes:

Gave it a bit of a polish as I take my dogs in the car and was getting quite a few scratches on the boot. Did this on my lunch breaks at work too because I have no life.

My mum was rear ended by a taxi while driving my car.. I had hers as I was taking it into my work for its MOT. Sod's law!

October 2015 - Hit a pothole in town that was filled with water and damaged one of my front tyres so badly that the wire from the bead was poking out! Had to go to halfrauds to buy a jack so I could change my wheel over. So I changed my first ever wheel! I noticed that my tyre was also down to the chord on the inside even tho there were no scrubbing noises clear while driving.. So I bought some spacers while I was there to make sure my tyres clear the struts!

I then booked her in for a wheel alignment as it was crabbing all over the road while I was driving. Turns out the two rear control arms needed replaced :( so after a 212 quid bill, she actually drove in a nice steady straight line again.. Great price imo for two rear control arms and a four wheel alignment with a print-out! Thoroughly recommend Automek in East Kilbride to anybody around the area! party0011.gif

Started getting a rumble from my nsr wheel bearing just five days before ed38 so I had to go down in Adams car rather than take my own.. Didn't want to do a stupid amount of miles knowing it needs done!

November 4th 2015 - One year of ownership. (A lot of the following is copy pasted so excuse the weird fonts and current tense bla bla)

Made a deal with Adam that if I bought a porsche oil cap he'd swap me his R8 oil cap... So that's his oil cap arrived today and I'll hopefully have the R8 one by Friday! Yay for pointless modifications  happy2.gif

Also ordered the 6 piece chrome-tipped switches from China.. I've heard they're actually of a decent quality comparable to OE so we'll see when they arrive! It's the little things in life  love.gif

November 12th:

RAMAIR had a cheeky wee sale on ebay so I picked an intake up for just £155! Bargain to me :) received it in last night and that's it all fitted now! Car feels so much more responsive which I didn't expect at all

Half of my engine bay was missing so this has made a massive improvement. Fitted the porsche oil cap while I wait on my R8 cap.

Here's what I posted on January 31st 2016.. A sign of my luck to come.

"Financial Mistake" windscreen sticker has arrived, along with my purple fog light tint. Those can wait though because the car truly is a financial mistake and I am a moron.

Managed to reverse into a Corsa at speed, though I'll make myself feel a bit better and admit that it was in my blind spot. But still, I hit it. I need a bumper, rear diffuser, parking sensor and replace my two rear drivers side tail lights.. The outer one is smashed so that's a priority :( The inner is just slightly cracked. Haven't washed the car in about two months so it's absolutely disgusting to look at. Completely fallen out of love.

Purchased an outer tail light, need to fit it when I can be bothered.. Also, the same day I damaged it my pad wear light popped up on the dash so I need to order discs and pads now too.. Oh and fix the Corsa. I'm utterly skint.

Then, I get a lovely screw in my front tyre and have had to pop the spare on for now. I honestly want to cry when I look at it. She was so beautiful.

Then to add insult to injury, my drivers window managed to open itself in tropical rain and I only realised when the alarm was set off about four hours later... Car was utterly soaked and my central locking no longer works. I have to open the car with the key and it sets the alarm off.

Also, the sunglass holder fell out on top of my head and it hurt. Then the rest of the plastics decided to follow suit. I'm so fed up of this car but I know I'll love it when I fix her all up so must remain somewhat positive. Cry cry cry. I'll upload some pictures when I'm on my phone but I needed to write this long post to vent a little bit about how much I hate it. Broken. Stupid. Golf

In other news, my Mum has just traded her diesel A4 in for a 57 black GTi. What a woman  drinking.gif

EDIT:

Adam took my key apart: central locking now works again! The mind boggles.. Oh and I ordered rear footwell lights and they've arrived now too.. Something else to fit when I can be arsed. No motivation for the car at present.

Valentines day 2016 - Adam helped me re-align the rear bumper and he hot glued the parking sensor back together. Somehow it worked! Vast improvement but still very obviously broken. I also had bought my first ever toolkit, Halfords pro kit!

March 2016 - CV joint and a CV boot done on the front, major service done by my work and had the car checked over. Mentioned that I needed front discs & pads shortly...

When driving at 50mph+ I started getting a horrendous vibration through the steering. At around 60-70mph it's so violent that the arm rest could actually be felt juddering from side to side and the steering wheel was quite difficult to hold comfortably. The car first did this back in September 2015 after receiving it back from a garage (was in for 2 rear control arms and a full alignment) and I assumed it was a wheel balancing issue so in October the wheels were finally balanced and the problem was still there. I took the car back to the garage that did the initial work and they checked it over... On the phone they said it sounded like a driveshaft problem so that's the first thing they checked. Absolutely no play in either shaft, and all the suspension appears sound. They suggested I raise the car as it was stupidly low, and this should eliminate my issue somewhat. I raised the car a few days later and they were correct, problem resolved to a standard I was comfortable with. However, it's back with a vengeance  sick0020.gif

I didn't know what to do - there was still absolutely no play in either shaft! I didn't want to go replacing them and it turned out to be something else, but no garage had been able to pinpoint anything at all wrong with the car.

April 7th 2016 - bought some R32 front brakes!

49918114232_6798202e69_k.jpg34 by morgenn, on Flickr

When I got home from picking these up (we had taken Adam's car) I drove my own and the wheel fell off... There had been no warning vibrations or anything untoward until literally a second before it came off! I had been on a roundabout though so I wasn't going quickly. I had asked my friend to tighten my wheels up for me (I was swapping over my Mums wheels to mine in case my vibration issue was wheel related) and he mustn't have... Lesson learned - always check yourself!!

Anyway, the wing was easily popped back in and there was such slight damage to the hub that nothing has been affected. Lucky, lucky girl.

May 2016 - Not really much in the way of updates but I did a full interior out clean... I don't think the interior had ever been properly done so sitting on 8 years of filth was starting to make me feel a bit ill. Also cleaned the outside, isn't she pretty.

July 2016 - Insurance renewal time. £618 at the age of 21 wasn't too shabby.

Also received my front callipers back from powdercoating. Looked amazing and matched my nail polish!

49918113832_7882f63eed_k.jpg36 by morgenn, on Flickr

My air con has never worked so Adam thought he'd have a look at the fuses and managed to pull an airbag fuse... He didn't have a cable to turn the light back out so he contacted a friend who happily turned it off for me. He also offered to map the car for the really costly sum of a glass bottle of irn bru. He had a 360bhp mk6r that he had tuned himself so I was very comfortable with his capabilities! The car is DEFINITELY faster but no idea on power output unfortunately.

Gave the car absolute death for two days cos I was buzzing about how quick it felt... and killed a coil. Fitted R8 coils as the replacements!

49918113702_506e734026_k.jpg37 by morgenn, on Flickr

Left my car in a car park for a day and some old woman bumped the car.. There was no CCTV proof so we could never fully blame her but her car had grey paint on it and she was known to park in the location mines was! So irritating.. Light, wing and bumper all damaged.

49917812936_54d24c7623_k.jpg35 by morgenn, on Flickr

Little girl who couldn't ride her bike then fell into my car... I was raging so I went and grassed her into her Mum and she wasn't allowed to cycle next to the cars anymore. Sucks to be her

Here's what I posted July 15th 2016 - the beginning of what I thought was the end!

"Had a look around my car and I could honestly cry... It's in absolutely shocking condition. Front splitter has two holes in it, one on either side at the lowest point.. Front bumper is damaged from someone hitting it in a car park, drivers side front wing is rusting due to scrubbing and the passenger side is dented from the car park bump.. Scratch on one headlight from the same bump and also a massive scratch on my bonnet when my boyfriend forgot my bonnet was open and jacked the car up into the garage door lock.. Scratch on the nsr door from the little girl falling into it with her bike (didn't realise it was scratched, thought it was dirt), rust just below this scratch and just above the skirt.. Lacquer peel on the roof above the windscreen also.. The boot is now rusting too :( The rear is a riot from when I bumped it in February - both the bumper and diffuser are scratched and dented as well as the o/s/r inner light being cracked. Oh and all four wheels are kerbed/have been hit with a sledgehammer.

I don't even know where to begin.. I don't really have many options when I can't afford a full respray do I?  None of the rust will be under warranty because the car has actually previously had a full spray.. I think it was a bad job though and that explains the lacquer peel."

August 2016 - some positive updates. Ignition festival had it's debut and I had been given free tickets from work because they know that cars are my life. I impulse bought an R32 style milltek catback while I was there so I could FINALLY get the rear bumper fitted! Here she is after fitting... I had bought a diffuser but it was damaged in transit so I had to run her with no pants on for a while.

49917299878_1798448a89_k.jpg39 by morgenn, on Flickr

Diffuser arrived! Gloss black looks quality.

49917812431_4146787eb7_k.jpg40 by morgenn, on Flickr

August 2016 - this happened... Not sure what went wrong here, never found the issue!

"I was heading to Shell from my work on Tuesday night with 20 miles remaining of fuel left (Shell was only 3 miles away) and she cut out at a busy junction in the middle of rush-hour... I'm not sure that's right somehow!! I assume something's broken but for now I'll just fill her every time she hits a 1/4 tank  confused.gif"

October 2016 - Finally got my front brakes on! Got my brake lines from HEL

49918113357_2c40cffe14_k.jpg42 by morgenn, on Flickr

49917299443_2aeb67ecce_k.jpg43 by morgenn, on Flickr

This was all great, however the horrendous judder still occurs so that rules out warped discs, a stuck caliper or anything brake related... I'm a little gutted.

Thouuuugh.. Adam drove mines about while I went for a sunbed and when I was back in the car he questioned if it could be the rear brakes. This has never been suggested so I was a little dubious but he pulled the handbrake up while driving at a slow speed and the issue was ridiculously obvious! My rear brakes are ruined

November 2016 - Fitted the new rear brakes and a rear wheel bearing too... Vibration now slightly reduced, but still present so back to the drawing board. Also had the TPMS and ABS lights pop up on the dash but because I was skint I just dealt with it until February. At that point I got a new ABS sensor on the osf but it appears the wiring had rusted through and needed some soldering to be sorted. Adam kindly did this for me!

November 2016 - Got pulled for my number plate being in the window and fined £100. Never encouraged me to remove it from the window though.

Christmas day 2016 - rear shocks gave up and I had to buy new suspension.. Being a rotten time of year for it I bought FK coilovers to get me by.. The rears were fitted in early January 2017 as I forgot I would need to order top mounts too! I ordered these and the front were fitted in February at the same time the sensor was done.

49917812056_b053f4f2ba_k.jpg44 by morgenn, on Flickr

April 2017 - managed to murder one of my new rear springs.. I contacted FK and they sent me out a brand new pair due to the age of them! Good customer service

49917811551_60fb2a575b_b.jpg45 by morgenn, on Flickr

June 2017 - realised the car is too low and Adam raised it for me.. The car was trying to give itself a chassis notch!

May/June 2017 - Somebody hit my car again... and again, no note was left. This was becoming really boring by this point

Someone kept throwing coffee and other assorted liquids over my car outside work every few days/weeks... This lasted for like a year. Still no idea who or why.. They liked to wait until I had just washed it, too

Unsure of what month we did this.. But we split my wheels. The lips weren't in that good a condition but we figured we'd try and bring them up as best we could.. I bought a wheel polishing kit from Halfords and figured it'd do the job. And it really did do the job!! Wheels came up amazingly.

August 2017 - We were given some free tickets to the BTCC from my work, so we took my car up. On the way up Adam had a play with a new S3 and my diffuser flew off on the motorway.. I spent the day mourning my loss but on the way back we spied it on the side of the motorway so we turned at the next roundabout and Adam had to run across three lanes to retrieve it. Safe. It was in a sorry state, but at least I had it! I don't have any photos of it damaged but Adam primered and painted it for me because he felt bad about it coming off! Also got stuck in the mud when trying to leave, oops.

September 2017 - the day before Edition38... The car was ready! Diffuser and wheels on. I had to space the fronts 25mm to accomodate the front brakes! Even then there was literally 1mm of clearance. Looked SO spicy.

Fast forward to October - I hit a small pothole and bent a front wheel. Think the man in the wheel repair shop fancied me because he repaired it for free.

Again, fast forward to November... An ambulance was behind me and the car beside me wouldn't move so I had to mount a kerb, pulling my front bumper off in the process. The driver in my work took the car down to a bodyshop and they collected me later on to pick it up when it was fixed... Free. Lucky me.

November 2017 again, broke both front wheels.. Was running a space saver and 1 pescara.. Then my front badge came off in the clyde tunnel and my leak still hasn't been fixed.. I think it was this point I got fed up with the car.

Started looking for a runaround in early December and picked up my diesel VW Beetle in January 2018.. £550. Adam fitted a turbo and I then had a super reliable daily!

March 2018 the cars were swapped over and I insured the beetle, golf was put to bed then.

May 2018 - got two front wings and a bonnet, then purchased a gloss black front badge as well as a new oil filter for when I can be bothered fixing the thing.

August 2018 - Hadn't touched the car since March that year... Here's what I went back to.

Then I stupidly left it to sit again with a semi-open window for a good few months... January 2019 came and this is what I had to deal with. Prepare yourself...

March 2019 - Passed it's first MOT in a long while after getting new front discs & pads, new bonnet hinges, a rear caliper and rear pads.

April 2019 - She went in for a full respray! Had the quarters, sill etc fixed. Looked AMAZING.

I drove the car between April and September 2019... Then me & Adam bought a house so I sort of lost interest with it again. I also had my phone stolen in November '19 so I lost any photos I had of the Golf when it was on the road anyway.. However, I don't think there were any modifications anyway!

I didn't want to comment in case she shouted at me for using her reserved posts but you did it first! :P

I think here is slightly busier than the MK5 site so hopefully that encourages her to finish it!

Will be sorting the wiring tonight with a hope to get the airline ran tomorrow!

So, we're nearing present day which is nice.

September 2019 - Bought a house and stopped driving the car again, oh and we got a cat!

October 2019 - Bought air-ride even though I wasn't doing anything with the car

49919037283_c7caacf373_b.jpg70468243_10216855120744499_1603629084816965632_o by morgenn, on Flickr

November 2019 - replaced my daily driver with an F56 Mini, wanted one since my courtesy car back in 2015!

49919557611_0e700515de_b.jpg74216804_10217254293803576_8656602642031575040_n by morgenn, on Flickr

Last month quarantine boredom got me thinking I should put the golf back on the road and finally fit the air-ride which I bought back in October... It's sat in my living room since then so it's definitely in the way. Started off with buying xenons, got em for a very good price of £200. Just need a polish and adapters and i'm good to go!

49919025898_59c3d46faf_b.jpg98108507_10219015894202485_6881430136755847168_n by morgenn, on Flickr

May 2020 - first drive in 8 months!

49919884237_38ece7b768_b.jpg98339316_10219015895002505_8403363665088086016_n by morgenn, on Flickr

Popped her up on the ramp and she's all good underneath - couldn't find a single thing that it would need for MOT or any future work!

49919072938_d48963ef96_b.jpg98484486_10219015896242536_9073438465172963328_n by morgenn, on Flickr

Changed it onto Adams wheels as we were going to put it in for its ticket the next day... However, we've sort of started another big task before that can be done. I need tyres on my Pescaras but I want new wheels so I'm reluctant to spend money on tyres just yet

49919072873_b9cfeb6399_b.jpg99136378_10219015898362589_4006243329321730048_n by morgenn, on Flickr

Bought some IDF camber arms and a spoiler extension! Needs painted as it was on an ED30 with some funky glittery green paint.

49919585326_39306f53d8_b.jpg98297434_10219015899842626_6787877610085941248_n by morgenn, on Flickr

This is the start of the boot build... Cable running time for the audio. I've decided on a 12" sub but the one I bought years ago isn't going to be good enough so Adam has said I can run his until he needs it! So we're basing my boot build off of his amp & sub. My birthday is on the 24th of May so my Mum will be buying my front speakers too so it's all go!

This was yesterday evenings job! Woodwork. Went to b&q for the essentials and started building the frame. Adam did most of this as I'm inept, but I did try to help where possible!

Worked out exactly where I wanted each component to go.. Starting to take shape at this stage!

This is where we called it a night! Going back down today around 4.30 to put some more hours in

The poor thing really did go through a rough patch, let's hope it only gets better from here on.

My MK4 went through a period of repeatedly getting hit front and back with no notes ever left, rear bumper is still a scabby mess.

Also, your NS/R blinker fluid looks like it needs changing in this picture, don't neglect that.

So tomorrow or Saturday we'll need to do another B&Q trip for more wood. The sub box has still to be made up and I'll need a sheet of MDF to complete it. I have a few little bits & bobs to order up so I can imagine progress will slow down now! Adam has other things to do as well but hopefully the car will be nearly ready by the time I go back to work!

Will hopefully run the airlines tonight and if I get a clean run at it will throw the struts in.  Might take cans down and take her Mini.

Tomorrow I'll need to do an intercooler, turbo and timing chain on a TFSI.  I'd mess with mine but I'd rather get this done and out the way.  It's looking good though!

And a clear run at it was had, so here's the suspension going on!

Finished product!

Huge thanks to Adam for getting it sorted for me, I'm so happy! I did help a wee bit but I probably just got in the way and slowed things down to be honest

on a serious note: he actually did a brilliant job at it so although it's your car... well all the credit goes to.... Adam-

and i did spot you can crack out the red caliper paint again as they are in serious need of some TLC... other than that it's brilliant..

Yesterday the car went back up on the ramp due to both front bags leaking, turns out the fittings hadn't been tightened

It's my birthday today so very little progress since yesterday. I messed about a bit while Adam knocked up a sub box for me! Only thing I managed to get done was run some phono cables...

Managed to fit the wood needed on the roof of his e39

Sub box finito

I will admit, the vast majority does go to him and I'm super grateful but I do try my best to help and have done sooooome of the car on my own!   The callipers were powdercoated so they'll all need coated again.. Need to wait until I decide what I'm doing about colours..

I agree! However the 18's are just too small for the car now it's on air so I'll need to upgrade sizing and lose some of that spicy fitment  :(

*Also for anyone wanting to know about the kit, they don't give enough fittings, so you won't be able to complete the install in one go.  I had a fight with Parm about this when I did mine and he'd argued that "we don't know how you're going to do your boot build, so we can't supply infinite fittings" - which is accurate.  But the fittings that they do supply are a mix of 1/4 and 3/8, even though we've only got 3/8 lines, so the 1/4 fittings are scrap.  AND the number of fittings they do supply isn't enough to do ANY form of boot build - there isn't enough to blank the spare fittings on the tank.  So it doesn't matter what I wanted to do with the boot, there just isn't enough fittings period.

Oh, and the top mounts knock at a low height too, just like mine did.  Apparently that's normal.  Here we go agaaaain...

So you actually found the one down thing to aired out aftermarket airbags.... funny how oem airbags when fully aired out do not make that noise.... I was actually looking into oem bags from an HGV as I also noticed most aftermarket bags are noisy when aired out completely... never looked if it was the bags or the topmount to be fair but this was in early days.. .

I eventually gave up on the idea as I thought it would give me more headache than a simple coilover kit.

Aye, it's really annoying.  I was told that it's because it's too high but it's like 60mm down from stock.  Hardly "high".  I'll let Morgen deal with him because I think if I see him next I'll set fire to his stand.
