So I have a mk4 1.8t and in the last few days the steering has been a bit on/off. But most of the time feels heavy. I am not leaking fluid and the vacuum system is holding (going by boost gauge)

Do you think the pump is on it's way out, or the rack.

Any help would be appreciated

Thanks

Shaun

If the fluid levels are still ok, then it's probably not the rack.

But if the steering is getting vague & heavy when you use roundabouts or turning out of a junction, then it's more likely to be the pump.

Do you get any weird noises when steering? If there you do, sometimes it's the pulley on it which attaches it to the aux belt or the pump or the rack making them.

Thank Bud, levels are good it feels heavy and vague all the time even going straight. Thanks for your help. Thought was the pump. Rack looks fine and levels and hoses are good. At least the pump is eay to get too. Getting it off may be difficult.

Thanks

Shaun

If it's like that when trying to go in a straight line, then that's either your:

1) Tie rod ends

2) Wheel alignment

3) Steering rack
