Getting a bit bored/fed up of my MK4 GTI 1.8T

looking for something that is quick as standard so i wont need to spend a lot of money modifying it and in the end making it a less comfortable/enjoyable car.

my car currently has around 230bhp and a nice spec so i would want something that will be quicker than that and put a smile on my face.

up for any suggestions just to get the ball rolling.

hope you guys can help.

Would be one of these for me http://www.pistonhea...les/3154883.htm just about in your budget now and knocking on the door of 300 bhp with a good re-map.

I have driven loads different of cars via my job and the S3's always do it for me. Nice place to be, look good, go really well and build quaility is epic.

I will defo get one....one day!

1st choice ...... BMW E46 M3 .... very very fast and all round great car

2n choice ....... BMW E46 coupe 330 cd m sport .... 204bhp/300lb-ft standard .... a remap alone takes them over 250 bhp and over 400 lb-ft easy ..... the standard BMW clutches can handle the extra ... unlike the PD130/150.

3rd choice .... new shape Audi S3 (starting price around 12k for a good 1 on motorway miles).

BMW E46 M3 FTMFW .... unless you want 40+ mpg then remapped 330 cd m sport FTW.

That was one of my choices. i do like them and they are very nippy, just for the price i'm looking at it wouldn't be that great a one.... thanks [:)]

Golf R32

MKV or MKIV. not sure on these, don't think they will really be "quick" comparatively to the golf i currently have. i test drove a MKV R32 DSG and wasn't all that impressed...

1st choice ...... BMW E46 M3 .... very very fast and all round great car

2n choice ....... BMW E46 coupe 330 cd m sport .... 204bhp/300lb-ft

Odd... those are the exact three cars i have just been looking at today.

i worry about the servicing and other costs for the beemers, what are they really like?

S3 i mentioned above....

cheers for the input/opinions guys. any more?

bmw servicing is no more than vw servicing.

Personally mate the 330d will be quicker than the S3 in the real world and you can pick an e46 up in mint condition for £8k. you can also get a convertible if you so desire. for £12k you could probably find a high milage e90 330d.

What do you want from the car? A cruiser/motorway car, a car made for the b roads, good track car, rwd, fwd, 4wd....? If you want an amazing handling car you cant go wrong with an integra DC5. Straight line would be very similar to your golf but handling great

i just want a car that is allrounad quick, fairly comfortable but i dont do a lot of long distance driving..

i would like something that handles well but again i wont be tracking it or driving like a complete idiot so it doesn't need to be amazing.

basically something quicker than the golf that is just a bit newer and more solid...

E46's have had their day now, all destined to be bargain basement fodder very shortley,  the 330d's are overpriced and have all been to the moon and back.

Even the E46 M3s have dropped dramaticly in price and most are very miley and thrashed to within an inch of their life.

Smart money goes on the later E90 3 series model.....if it has to be a 3 series bimmer.

S4?

Hmm a potential but a 4.2l V8 seems a tad excessive.

also they for some reason seem huge as cars go, in all honesty i am a pretty short fellow and the idea of a car that big is pretty unnerving [:P]

i sort of agree, there is something very aged about the E46 interior. hasn't fared well with time.

my gripe with the E90/E91 is that if i'm getting one, it HAS to be the Coupe and therefore the only ones i really want are the 335d or 335i and they are both about 4-6k out of my budget... (i would love one of those cars more than anything really...)

The R before that model was a much, much better car. More comfortable as well. Faster.. only thing it lacks is the Knight Rider interior.

But still they're nice cars but that's a very high price..

Think about it this way ...... for the price of the optional extras inside some of the E46 M3's when new ....... you can now buy the whole car!

Nothing average about Harmon Kardon sound systems, widescreen sat navs and TV players, Xenon headlights, SMG gearbox/convertible (if you want), full sports nappa leather (choise of colours for you) electric heated memory seats, LSD, RWD, 343 bhp amazing sounding engine that was designed to be thrashed (they made it rev to 8k for a reason).

Get the CS (not CSL) and you also get CSL style alloys, bigger brakes and some extra fancy 'sport' setting IIRC.

What you get for your money is just crazy ...... the 330 cd m sport coupes can also be found with all the serious options inside. With a simple remap they go crazy fast in the real world.

For outright fun and ultimate speed i have not heard anything so far that would rival the M3 .... i borrowed 1 for 4 weeks whilst a mate was on holiday ..... it would take something like the Audi RS4 (close to double the price of the M3) to make me feel like it was better than the M3.

Also you can get 1 thats in great condition and has a long way to go before needing its next service. With the M3's its very important they have proof of the running in service at around 1k miles.

One good reason why you shouldn't buy an E46 M3.

nice find on the AMG and the XJR. The XJR is the later model one, the one Jezza drove to Scotland and back and said it was biblically good if I remember.
