 how about a jap car.

fully modded s15 can be bought from ireland for 6-7k. you would pay over 11k for the same car over here. or even a r33 gtr or r34 gtt.

Hmm, they do look a good car for the money, but it's not exactly any more of  a well refined machine and not all that much quicker. and it's also a ford... [:P]

R34 GTR (which is what you want) are rarer than hens teeth in a standard, good condition. Most are the GT which are rubbish and don't have the fancy electronics. Most of the GTRs have been given a million horsepower and thus demand a million pounds [:(]

Lexus's are very nice cars..

I mean whatever you get, please don't get an S3...they're getting so common. Nothing special or different about them anymore. [:(]

I'd go for a M3, more than likely to have been thrashed though!

Do your homework on running costs. The M3 will be astronomical in comparison with your mk4.

Dont be blinkered by VAG or German cars.

Have you had a look at Nissan 350Z's? Vauxhal Monaro VXR's? Or even a Mazda 3 MPS if you want a hatch? You could even look at Evo's and Imprezza's.

All offer a much better drive and are a lot more fun than the Golf.

What ever you chose, make sure you look at running costs. The car may be affordable but can you pay for the extra insurance/fuel/road tax etc?

So true jimmy.. I could go an trade my car in for a 20k Aston Martin. But filling it and service would be crippling. A mk5 GTI is a sensible move, relatively fun to drive and no more expensive to service than a 1.6FSI (fuel and insurance obviously more)

hmm, some more food for thought there, thanks Jimmy23VR5.

i do like the 350Z but i'm not sure how much i like it... and if i'm going for that sort of engine (3l + V6) i think i would rather go E46 M3.

at the moment i am seriously thinking that maybe a 3 door MV GTI in Pearl Black is the way forward with a Havair Airride kit.

If you want to ruin a mk5 GTI with air ride..... :-/ just drop it on a decent suspension setup.

almost, just a standard GTI for me though, i'm not a fan of the ED30 seats and it would feel like sacrilege to change anything on one, so for me it makes sense to pay far less and get one more suited to me..

I don't really understand this? why is it ruining the GTI. and how it dropping on a decent suspension setup an alternative to airride, they are completely different things. The decent air kits use Bilstien shocks anyway which are pretty bloody good..

please explain.

I would be tempted to buy an S2000, great car for the money, involving to drive and the option of roof down motoring. 9k rev limit , rear wheel drive and still surprisingly cheap to run for a 240bhp car. Plus you could get a very tidy one for under you budget and enough change for a decent holiday

Could be an option if an M3 Vert is out of the question

Because air ride is 'scene' and will impead the handing of your car. Having a quick car on air ride is nonsense to me. My opinion of course mate.

For me next car has to be 4WD and Turbo - S3 ticks those boxes for me. When i can afford one i'll have one.

All depends on what you want from a car James?

MKV GTI is good buy but if your thinking of having it on Air etc why not just keep what you have?

If it were me id wait for an S3 with the Top spec interior - Decent Map and you'll be loving it!
